We have a stunning 1950s quarter cup bra in our collection, showing us again that nothing is really new when it comes to fashion! A strapless quarter cup bra made of a nylon lace and stretch mesh wings. The neckline is scalloped with a ruffled tulle trim. Despite its cutaway cut, the bra offers a surprising amount of lift and shaping to the bust. Nevertheless, the lack of shoulder straps suggest that this style was most likely intended as a boudoir design rather than for everyday wear. This overwire bra was arguably the most difficult garment to reproduce out of all the objects selected by the students. Unlike underwires, overwires have largely fallen out of use in contemporary lingerie. Consequently, sourcing one with a similar profile and size to the original bra’s proved impossible. Fortunately, Xiangte Chen was able to find an innovative solution for this problem: working with a metalwork student, a custom made overwire was created to the same specifications as the original garment.
