You will never paint a picture of a character that your reader will whole heartedly share. Everyone will see different shades of hair when you say blonde. ⁣ ⁣ Some feel that the more description the better they can imagine the character. Other prefer very little and like to leave appearance up to their imagination. i like to toss up the two and search for a good balance.⁣ ⁣ The key is to ⁣ A) Mix it within your paragraphs. Dumping large amounts of physical appearance is overwhelming and as seen above can be a little boring. ⁣ ⁣ B) Add some colour to it. what i mean by this is don’t tell me he had a round face, square face. Tell the reader his face is meant to remind them of a child. i read something online, ‘Don’t tell me her eyes were blue, tell me of the make up smudges down her face the darkness only adding the the freshly flowering bruise.” ⁣ ⁣ But like everything. Short and sweet. If i’ve mentioned once that his jaw is a bit offset there is no need to remind the reader of this a hundred times. Perhaps if it holds some sort of important you could mention it a few times throughout the story but no need to drown your reader in repetitive details.⁣ ⁣ Some fun ways to introduce/mention characters appearance :⁣ -Use the environment around the character⁣ -Comparing. We humans love to do this in real life. It’s only natural our characters do it as well. ⁣ -Mirrors. Personally i haven’t INTRODUCED any of my characters through them studying their own imagine. I HAVE however used a mirror to reinforce how they look by comparing their current state to how the use to look. ⁣ -Have others comment on appearance. “Why do you never wear nice clothes.” or “That scar over your cheek, how did you get it?” ⁣ ⁣ There are so many other ways to introduce characters, both creative and fun that enchants your reader rather than overwhelming them.⁣ ⁣ QOTD: What techniques do you use to introduce your characters appearance?⁣

I love seeing the transformation from first draft to a finished piece of writing. It’s like looking at a before and after makeover picture. I enjoy the freedom of thrashing out the first draft; getting the story down without the pressure of perfection. When I was a kid I was really into writing extended metaphors. I always found it cathartic to put my thoughts down in that way. ❔comment a conventional writing rule that you've broken or seen broken well❔ one that I've seen done very well is switching perspective or tense within a piece of writing. Generally, the rule is that you pick one and stuck with it. The work is either first, second, third, or omniscient and you dont mix, and the work is in present or past tense which is also maintained. In general I agree with this rule and, as an editor, a lot of what I do is pointing out when authors accidentally tense switch for correction. BUT I have seen this done beautifully and masterfully on several occasions and it gave me goosebumps. . . .
