We Animals Media filmmaker, Kelly Guerin's account of her experience documenting a mass fish kill in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence: . "Jo and I drove to a small family park in Wilmington where a fish kill had been reported. We grabbed our cameras, stepped out of the car, and walked to the edge of a small freshwater lake. At first, we could only see about a few dozen fish floating motionless on top of the putrid, oily water. But then, to our horror, we discovered thousands more bodies clustered throughout various parts of the lake. Their faces were frozen in shared expressions of agony, mouths wide open as if gasping for oxygen and eyes grotesquely bulged out from their skulls. Fish kills are common after flooding; when sediment and deoxidizing bacteria runoff are swept en masse into freshwater sources, oxygen levels plummet and the fish trapped inside die a slow, excruciating death by suffocation. Officials maintain that fish kills occur solely due to flooding, but what in the water was responsible is an open question. @WaterkeeperAlliance founder Rick Dove offered his perspective: . “Could be toxins, biological oxygen demand [BOD], low oxygen from the floodwaters themselves – only sampling will answer the question. If you are wondering if swine and poultry waste could be responsible in whole or part, the answer is yes. That waste is extremely high in BOD. It has killed massive numbers of fish based on that before.” . As we were capturing images of the dead fish, we were joined by Roxanne, a local animal activist. She ushered us to one enclave of the pond where there was a large concrete overflow pipe trickling the smallest amount of clear water into the brown sludge and massive cluster of rotting fish bodies. In front of this pipe opening were the last surviving fish in the lake, straining lethargically against the slight current of oxygen. Every so often, a fish would give up the struggle, stop swimming, and succumb backwards into the pile of floating bodies." . . : Mass fish kill. North Carolina, USA, September 2018. Matthew Vassar (1792-1868) This week’s #TombstoneTuesday is Matthew Vassar. Brewer, merchant, philanthropist, and founder of Vassar College. Vassar was born in England in 1792 before emigrating to Dutchess County with his family at the age of four. At age 14, Vassar, uninterested in the family brewing company and opposed to becoming a tanner’s apprentice, ran away from home and found work assisting a storekeeper in today’s Balmville. Four years later, after having saved money and feeling that he had proved himself, he decided to go back to Poughkeepsie and join the family’s brewing business. A year later, a malt-dust explosion destroyed the brewery and his older brother died after inhaling the fire’s toxic fumes. Undeterred, Vassar began a new brewery that would grow to have multiple locations and a giant facility on the Poughkeepsie waterfront. Besides his successful beer enterprise, Vassar was instrumental in getting the first railroad built up the Hudson River, forming the Poughkeepsie Savings Bank, and also putting up the money to free John Bolding, a fugitive slave from South Carolina who was seized in Poughkeepsie. In 1861, at age the age of 69, with no previous experience as an educator, Vassar endowed and founded Vassar College. The college helped pioneer women’s education in the United States and offered a liberal arts education that was equal to the best men’s colleges of the day. Seven years later, Matthew Vassar would died while delivering his farewell address to the college’s Board of Trustees. Today, he is buried with his wife, Catherine, at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Vassar designed their tombstone of a large acorn atop a column. He was reputed to have said to students who saw the design (which references the old adage of the oak and the acorn): “You get the point.”

Born #onthisday in 1738, John Singleton Copley painted 9-year-old Daniel Crommelin Verplanck in 1771 seated in a grand classicizing setting with a background identified as a view from the Verplanck country house at Fishkill, NY. My eye always goes straight to the marvelous squirrel tail, a tour-de-force of brushwork (49.12).
