Sorry I’ve been so inactive lately. I was in a car accident last month and sustained back and neck injuries. I was rear-ended pretty badly waiting at a red light. It was a hit and run, literally, the guy got out of his car and actually ran away ♀️. Probably because all of his airbags deployed. When I went to the ER that night, the pain was there but it wasn’t crazy so I took a couple days off and went right back to training. Two days ago, i was doing some pretty light combos on the bag, (nothing too strenuous even) then yoga, and i couldn’t even make it through the entire yoga class because of the pain. It hurts when I take deep breaths, move too much, and even lay down straight on my back. I got xrays done yesterday to check for possible fractures so I’ll keep you posted.
What this has taught me is taking enough time to rejuvenate and let your body heal is sometimes even more important than training. Martial Artists are always taught to fight through the pain, you’ll get stronger that way; I’ve done martial arts my whole life so that’s all I know. I’m really going to take this time to learn how to listen to my body and all the warning signals she gives me. Hopefully I’ll be back to training in no time because it’s only been two days that I’ve been sitting still and I’m already going crazy! ♀️

Hollow body hold. An exercise that does a great job of challenge the anterior trunk. All 4 variations in the post utilize a resistance band up overhead to help maintain tension in the core. Keep the arm position at a 90 degrees angle with the band and back flush wth the floor during exercise as a general rule of thumb.

WHAT'S A PIRIFORMIS AND WHY DOES IT HURT?!⠀⠀

The piriformis is a small muscle located deep in the buttock, behind the gluteus maximus. It runs diagonally from the lower spine to the upper surface of the femur, with the sciatic nerve running underneath or through the muscle. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Your piriformis has 2 main functions. ⠀⠀
1️⃣ It helps enable your hip to rotate. ⠀⠀
2️⃣It allows your leg and foot to turn outward.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Sitting in the same position for extended periods of time or exercising the lower body can irritate both the sciatic nerve and piriformis muscles. Try these exercises to get some relief! ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
1. Seated Piriformis Stretch ⠀
➕Start in a seated position⠀
➕Bend your legs and position your feet flat on the floor ⠀ ⠀
➕Cross one leg over the other quad and feel a stretch in the side of your hip⠀⠀
⠀⠀
2. Pigeon Pose⠀ ⠀
➕Start on all fours ⠀ ⠀
➕Bring one leg back⠀ ⠀
➕Bring your other leg up and across your body ⠀ ⠀
➕Sit back into it ⠀⠀
