Hello! I’ve had a lot of new followers over the last few days in readiness for the launch of today’s rainbow month challenge with @fatmumslim and @kimbalikes, so I thought I’d introduce myself to those of you who don’t know me. I’m Ali, a fashion designer with two kids, who lives in Sydney and has a strong English accent. I like to think of myself as a little ray of sunshine ☀️ as I’ll always think the best of everything and everyone. My Instagram journey began with playing along with #photoaday back in 2015 and shortly after I became part of the original #everydaystyle community too. This challenge will combine my tribes and I’m super excited about it. I did think I could have had a professional shoot for all of these prompts but that’s not really my style. My Instagram feed is the reality of what I’ve actually worn and on the day I’ve worn it and is my style library. I have a casual bias with how I dress and left unchecked it would be denim and stripe tees everyday. For nearly three years though, I’ve not worn the same look twice in a bid to keep it interesting. This month I’ll challenge myself to not only wear the colour prompt but to do it in a way that’s out of my comfort zone. In grade seven, one of my classmates wrote in large letters on the brick wall in chalk, "Chantelle has a jelly belly and thunder thighs". I bet she can't even remember that she did it, but I do. . A few years ago, not long after I'd had Lulu {while I was still breastfeeding} a message popped up on Facebook from another ‘friend', "You're still fat, hey?" . Those words on that wall, they shaped my belief system for so many years. I was the sum of my imperfect body parts. I felt constant shame, and I hid my body. Those words from that person on Facebook, they knocked the breath out of me. Because they were true. Because they came out of nowhere. I felt instant shame and hurt. . I cried. I cried some more. They were simple words, not particularly nasty but it made me feel like a failure, and that everyone must have thought the same of me. I must have been a laughing stock of the internet. I retreated and hid away for a while, being less vulnerable and sharing less. . I have a little place in my brain where all the hurtful words of days gone by are stored. The words on the wall, and those from Facebook are just a few among many. There have been many words yelled from cars as I strolled along the street. More while I exercised at the beach. I wish I could throw them away, but they come out when I'm filled with self doubt. I'm sure others do the same. . Imagine a world without those words. Without people with enough hurt in themselves to spew them at people. I’m sure when people say these things they don’t realise how hurtful, lasting and often irreparable the damage can be. I hope I can teach my kids not to be the deliverers of such messages. I know how much those words hurt, so I try not to say or write them, no matter how mad I might be. Words hurt. . Be kind. Always.
