School is finally out for this kid and it’s such a bitter sweet moment. He definitely left a mark at his elementary school with all the teachers and staff. They will never know how grateful I am for them and how they helped him grow. I will especially miss the school nurses. Although I was that crazy mom that made sure to be on top of everything when it came to his Food Allergies or Meds they never made me feel as if I was bothering them. They were amazing and I hope that the school nurses in the next school will be just as amazing as they were. Congrats Jay on moving on up to 5th Grade! We are so proud of you!! Hi everyone! Since we have a lot of new followers (thank you!), we figured it would be a good time to re-introduce ourselves. We are Nicole and Jeremy - founders of AFBC, bakers and lovers off all things gluten, nut, dairy, egg, soy and corn free! We started AFBC in 2014 out of our home in Littleton with one goal in mind - to make sure that nobody feels left out of a special occasion because of food allergies or dietary restrictions. We opened our storefront in July of 2017 and have been overwhelmed in the best way possible with the amount of love and support we have received from the Denver community. Not knowing anyone else in the same boat, I wanted to reach out to other moms going through what I was going through and to create a community. And boy has it evolved! E A S T E R B A S K E T S ⁣ As many of you already know, Kai has food allergies, which can be a bit challenging during the holidays. I never want him to feel left out or excluded from traditional kid events and experiences, so I try to create allergy-friendly alternatives so he’s never missing out on the fun! For today’s #ThrivingThursdaysTips, I’m offering allergy-free alternatives to make extra-special Easter baskets for the kids you love with food allergies.⁣ ⁣ 1️⃣ EASTER CANDY- You can't have an Easter basket without candy, Duh! Since peanuts and dairy are two of the top eight allergens, we stay away from milk chocolate and instead we stuff our Easter eggs with nut and dairy-free candies like peeps, jellybeans, skittles, gummy bears, and sour patch kids. Generally, fruit candies are ok, but  always double check the ingredients because you’d be surprised to see how many seemingly safe items have milk or egg ingredients.⁣ 2️⃣ CHOCOLATE BUNNIES- Enjoy Life Foods @enjoylifefoods makes delicious dairy-free chocolate bars and chocolate chips that are free from gluten and 14 common allergens. Check out my stories for 20% off their Easter Chocolate Minis. You can buy vegan chocolate bunnies (which are kind of expensive) or you can make your own by buying Easter egg and bunny molds from a craft store or @amazon. Check out my stories this weekend and next week to see me make my own chocolate Easter candies! ⁣ 3️⃣ ART SUPPLIES- Hit up @michaelsstores, @joann_stores, or @dollartree for crayons, coloring books, paint sets, sticker books, craft sticks, pom-poms, and other arts and crafts.⁣ 4️⃣ ACTIVITIES- The dollar spot at @target is the perfect place to stock up on cute activities such as puzzles, playing cards, slime, and small toys.⁣ 5️⃣ TOYS & STUFFED ANIMALS- This is an easy one, lol! Go have some fun with the special kids in your life!⁣

F O O D A L L E R G I E S As many of you know, Kai has several food allergies and this was a HUGE adjustment, because neither my husband nor I have food allergies, so I had to learn how to prep, cook, and buy allergy-free foods and snacks. Tag a friend who may be interested in these five gems I learned as we navigated Kai’s food allergies: 1️⃣ T O P E I G H T- the most common kids’ food allergies are milk, eggs, peanuts, soy, wheat, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. 2️⃣ E C Z E M A- food allergies and eczema go hand and hand. A new study suggests that a b​reakdown of the skin barrier and inflammation from eczema could trigger food sensitivity in babies, indicating that food allergies may develop via immune cells in the skin rather than the digestive track. Thus, early treatment of eczema could potentially prevent food allergies in children. 3️⃣ S Y M P T O M S- some of the most common reactions to ingesting allergens are: trouble breathing, coughing, stomach ache, hives or red spots, swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, and in extreme cases, anaphylaxis. 4️⃣ A L L E R G Y T E S T I N G - knowledge is power. If your kid has eczema or other symptoms, take them to a pediatric allergist for testing. Once you know what their allergens, you can avoid their triggers, and have a happy, healthy, and more comfortable kid. 5️⃣ E P I P E N- Luckily, Kai has not had a severe allergic reaction, but we always have Benadryl and an epi pen ready just in case. Not only do have them everywhere, we have also trained his teachers, babysitters, and caretakers about how to properly administer them.
