It's #feedingtubeawarenessweek and although Jax is finally 100% oral fed, he will always be a former #tubie. We have been through the ringer with this kid regarding feeds + things still aren't "normal", but he's made such strides. As much as I hated his NG, that little yellow tube was his life line (literally) for 5 months, so for it I will be forever grateful. People always asked me if I could "just feed Jax (orally)", but trust me when I say that feeding tubes aren't the "easier alternative to eating"; kids who have tubes either can't eat orally or don't take enough in orally to sustain themselves. I think I speak for most, if not all, tubie parents when I say we WISH our kids would "just eat normally". In Jax's case, for 5 months he couldn't eat via bottle and then once I took the tube out, we learned he aspirates thin liquids, which means taking breastmilk via bottle is almost impossible without risking serious health problems. We are still working with speech to get him drinking breastmilk (not only because he'll need to be able to drink thin liquids in the future, but also because I have so much if it ➡️), but it's a slow process. In the hospital just recently, he aspirated the saline they squirted in his nose to clear out his chest + throat and he had another regression in eating. Because of that, he ended up on the IV due to poor intake (they said they'd rather put an NG in, but I was too scared - it felt like a step back ). So ride the rollercoaster we do , but seriously, this kid is amazing and has come so far. I'm not really sure I believe this - Jax is 10 MONTHS OLD! Like, it's time to start planning his FIRST birthday. This is baffling to me. Partially because I feel like we've known him forever, partially because I feel like he just got here! Jax has had a huge month and is really starting to show his personality more and more. He now squawks to get our attention and "talks" to us as loud as he can He pulled to stand from a sitting position and was able to get BOTH feet under him (big deal for this little dude) TWICE in the past two days!! He fell off the couch and got his first goose egg this weekend (which you might be able to see if you look through the pudding ), but handled it like a champ. He loves to scoot around and is tolerating tummy time so much more now! Jax has been given the green light to gain those LBs, hence the breastmilk chocolate pudding face But, big news, he's drinking almost ENTIRELY breastmilk now through a regular bottle!!!! This is SO HUGE!! We're not placing another formula order after we run out...so it's boobie milk from here on out and I couldn't be more proud of this kid.
