A two-fer in Whittier! I love restaurants with multiple signage and Jack’s gives us a couple of goodies - one in Googie neon glory and another in charming backlit plastic. The restaurant dates back to 1933 although the signage and the building are closer to mid-century. @retromike and I can attest to good food and an awesome wait staff!

Some good news for a change, as promised... in San Jose, this neon pig has a reason to be dancing! Although Stephen’s Meats has long been closed and demolished, preservationists demanded that this sign be saved. And now, all these years later it has been fully restored. The only bad news is that I had to get back to LA and couldn’t stick around to see it lit up! Katz Drug in Williamsburg was just about as perfect a storefront as you’ll ever see ... those green panels, magnificent neon in great and varying type styles.... Brooklyn has lost a lot of great independent drug stores in the last few years like Maiman’s and Antelis. Others have stripped away their neon, like beloved Harold’s but on Graham Avenue good old Katz Drug survived ... unchanged for decades.... until last year... The gorgeous neon you see here has been stripped away and replaced with LED lights. WHY?!?!? It pains me too much to go back and investigate. I was always particularly intrigued by that little neon "G" on the bottom right, just next to that white plastic sign. Louie Rigler opened his electronics shop in 1958 after fleeing his native Hungary with nothing more than his family and a degree in electrical engineering. His small business in the working class Riverside neighborhood in Buffalo grew and grew. He eventually won awards for being the largest dealer of Sylvania and Goldstar ... From Budapest to Buffalo, as the Buffalo News wrote when they profiled the prominent businessman in the 1970’s. Mr. Rigler died in 2018 at 90 years old.
