Peas develop from the base of the pod, up. That means I picked this pod a couple of days too early. To help you work out when to harvest your peas, take note of the sowing date. Most seed packets will tell you how many days it will take for the produce to mature. If you have the date at hand, you'll always know what day to begin your harvest. - 60-70 days in the case of shelling peas Happy digging! ✌ . . #peas #gardening #urbanfarming #veggiegarden #veggiepatch #gardeningforbeginners #gardeningbasics #instatip #instatips #sarahsgardeningtips #gardeningtips #gardeningtip #urbanfarming #urbanhomestead #homegrown #digyourfood

Oct 1st is not too early to think about Christmas dinner when you grow your own food. If you want your Carrots, Beetroot, Beans, Radishes, Zucchini or Corn to feature at the table on Chrissy day, sow your seeds or plant seedings now. For Turnips, Radishes and Lettuce varieties, wait 3-4 weeks. And if, like me you already have Tomatoes, Potatoes, Garlic and Onions growing, it's highly likely you'll be nibbling on them too. It's not too late to plan your homegrown Chrissy dinner but you need to get sowing and planting this week. D I Y Fertilisers There are loads of fertilisers on the market to choose from but I prefer to make my own. Not only do I save a lot of money but it's so easy to do! I always know exactly what I'm feeding my plants and I can make up my own mixture every week depending on what needs feeding. This week I'm using a mixture of Nettle, Comfrey, Carp with Seaweed and Worm Tea. To make your own fertiliser simply steep some nutrients/manure in a garbage bin full of rain water for a few months, being sure to stir the solution once a week to help the solid matter break down. (You can use town water but I find rain water is a lot cleaner and better for my plants.) When you're happy with the consistency, you can then aerate the lot with an old fish tank pump for 24 hours. Although aerating isn't necessary, I highly recommend it as it increases the amount of beneficial microbes in the fertiliser which promotes healthy soil and stronger plants. When using this steeping method, you're really only limited by what you can get your hands on. For instance, Carp is an introduced species to the Murray Darling river system and once caught they aren't allowed to be thrown back. So during the summer holidays when the foreshore is full of fishermen I collect the massive discarded carp and bring them home for steeping. (And if I'm making a new garden bed I bury them along with compost to give the new area a kickstart.) So have a think about your area and what you can get hold of to have a go at making your own nutrient rich fertilisers. Quick Tip ✔ Keep your Strawberries in a sheer jewellery bag to protect them from the mouths of hungry garden critters. Be sure to keep them exposed to the sun so they can ripen up and remove the ripe strawberries from the bag as soon as they're ready to eat. Seed Saving By Fermentation. To save your seeds using the fermentation method, simply squeeze your tomatoes into a glass or jar of warn water (without a lid) and place them in a warm spot for around 48hrs, stirring occasionally. The pulp will begin to break down and separates from the seeds. (Viable seeds are heavy and will sink to the bottom of the jar while bad seeds will float to the top.) Pour the scum on top of the water into the garden or compost then gently run whatever is left through a sieve to clean the remainder of the pulp off. Write the name of the seeds on some baking paper and spread them out to allow them to dry in a cool dark place. Once dry you can scrape the seeds off the paper and store them in an airtight bag. Alternatively you can spread them out on some paper towel. When they're dry, fold the paper towel up and store the whole thing. When spring comes around, simply tear the paper towel into small pieces and bury them in the soil. The paper will disintegrate and the seeds will germinate. To label your seeds, reuse a plastic container by cutting it into strips to create tags. These tags can then stay with the seeds throughout the entire process and eventually go into the seedraising tray next year. 5 Signs Your Pumpkin Is Ready To Be Harvested. Pumpkins gain colour and flavour with age so the longer you can hold off from harvesting them, the better. Here are 5 easy ways to tell if the wait is finally over. 1. When you tap on the pumpkin with your hand it sounds hollow. 2. The stem of the pumpkin is hard and brown (pic 3) 3. The tendril closest to the pumpkin has also turned brown and died off completely. (The tendril is the curly bit that comes out of the vine. Its purpose is to grab hold of things around it to stabilize the plant. Pic 2) 4. When you push your fingernail into the skin it will dent but not puncture. 5. Your Pumpkin is the same colour all over. Ideallly you should wait until the vine has died off completely (pic 3) but if you just can't wait to taste your bounty, I hope these little guidelines have helped. How Sunflowers Bloom. Sunflowers are made up of around 2000 tiny flowers that develop from the inside out. As the leaves part, the sunflower begins to unfurl to reveal the pointy stamen of each tiny flower, pressed flat against the head.-The darker colour on the right As the stamen stand up you start to see the tiny flower beneath. -The orangey red bit in the middle. As the pollen is removed from the stamen by pollinators, it shrivels up and the tiny flower is fully exposed. -Yellow flowers on the left Once all the tiny flowers have blossomed they die down and fall off to reveal a single seed under each flower. That's up to 2000 seeds in one sunflower! Nature really is amazing and it's always worth taking the time to notice. All the baby Brocs. I cut the sides off an old styrofoam box so I could use the base as a giant saucer.
