Each dog enjoys their praise in different ways. Choco Taco likes neck scratches at the down curbs. We pay our dogs in praise and love, so we make it have as much worth as possible. First day in the city with the new pups! I was pleased with our day, including the weather itself which was very pleasant. All of the dogs will come back to the city at least one more time just to get a good feel for how they behave. Some will come more than twice, others will not! Happy #TrainingTuesday! This week we would like to introduce to you Guide Dog Mobility Instructor Kevin. Kevin started working at Leader Dog in 1999, he has had five different positions at Leader Dog. But loves his role as a GDMI because it allows him to work with both dogs and clients. Kevin has been the primary instructor for many clients with their first leader dog and then again when they come back for a successor dog. Kevin enjoys spending time with his wife and two teenage daughters. His daughters keep him busy attending and coaching their sports events. He also enjoys fishing, bowling, golfing and spending time with his family and two career change dogs at their cabin.

Just like a client coming to get a dog; our apprentice trainers must practice Juno training with their instructor. (During JUNO the Instructor pretends to be the dog)During JUNO they learn basic guide commands as well as what to do if their dog is misbehaving. A minimum of 2 Juno sessions are completed before they are issued their dog. The apprentice loads the up on the bus and rides with the clients as if they are a regular part of the class. They spend time waiting for their turn in the downtown building where they get to know the other clients in class.

Yesterday all of my new pups and two of my holdovers completed our Midterm Blindfolds (the other two go next week, we just ran out of time!). One big misconception about the blindfolds is that they are “tests” for our dogs. (Its a yes AND no answer, but they are certainly not tests in the traditional sense.) The blindfold is not a pass or fail and dogs are not given any sort of grade. Instead, it is a checkmark for us humans to see how well a dog is progressing in their training. Blindfolds can help show us if a dog is on track or if they potentially need more time. Occasionally, the blindfold can show if a dog may really be struggling with something.
