How amazing are star sapphires. This effect is caused by light reflecting off small needle like rutile inclusions within the stone. This cabachon sapphire is set with black and white diamonds. The design was inspired by the yin and yang ☯️

Wow! What a stunning combination and specimen. Just check out this blue azurite and green malachite from Milpillas mine, Sonora, Mexico. These two copper carbonates are often found frequently together and give us one of the mineral world’s most crazy colour combinations. These copper carbonates form by alteration processes of primary copper ores where surface or ground waters transform the sulphide ore minerals into secondary minerals. The Milpillas mine has a fascinating history, being discovered in 1978 and soon realising an orebody at depth was overlain by huge amount of alluvium and within faulted blocks, but when mining started world-class copper secondary minerals were encountered, including a bonanza of world-class azurites. The locality became an instant classic, azurites rivalling those other great historical mines such as Bisbee and Tsumeb. Just look at this specimen, vivid, lustrous ‘electric’ blue azurite crystals, sharp and terminated all joined by a shining velvety mass of sparkling green malachite. In fact, azurite is often a dark ‘midnight’ blue colour, but here a thin malachite layer underneath the azurite reflects light and gives us this exceptional ‘electric’ blue colour. Although great specimens have been abundant for a few years, they are now no more as the enrichment ‘zone’ in which they occurred has now been entirely worked though, with mining now continuing into the solid ore body (chalcocite) below. With that, this specimen is one of the best I have seen, and has been called “the Fish”, I wonder why? . Just stunning, what a legacy for this great mine. #minerals #mineralogy #gems #gemology #gemmology #fineminerals #crystals #crystallography #copper #azurite #malachite #nature #amazingnature #science #geology #ore #beautiful #amazing #earthstreasures #mineralshow #blue #green #velvety #iloveminerals #fish #instagood #naturesart #art

Incredible to look at one of the latest creations of Master gem cutter, Victor Tuzlukov. Victor is a member of US Faceters Guild and participates in different national and international faceting competitions. In 2010 he set a world record 299.17 points out of 300, his precision cutting - exceptional. This is a 424 carat, 860 facetted CZ (cubic zirconia) and after the recent tragedy in Paris at the Notre Dame, the cut was inspired and subsequently modeled on the stained glass ‘Rose Window’, translating it into this 3D gem design. What a magnificent gem with overall presence. Those that saw it were stunned by its brilliancy and lighting effects, and alongside masterful polishing brings out the best of the stone and design. It sort of just pulls you into ‘infinity’. It is now the 5th stone in his Heritage collection. Crazy large 187.34 carat 7cm long abalone from Cedros Island, Baja California Sur, Mexico. These Abalone pearls are from species of Gastropods (literally meaning “stomach on a foot”) that produce nacreous shells, sometimes of large size and beauty and often in these strange ‘baroque’ horn shapes. Over the past few years a lot of research has been undertaken on the mechanisms for the origin of ‘colour’ in minerals, but in only a few cases does colour arise from diffraction by repeated structural features. The iridescence colours of abalone shell arise from ‘Bragg Diffraction’ of light from the layers of nacre which although locally regular, can vary in thickness and spacing during growth cycles giving a complex play of colour, including colour changes with angle of observation. Thin nacre below 0.12 μm (micrometers) give no colour, at 0.15μm only blue, up to 0.2μm green makes an appearance but around 0.5μm only green and red are seen (the upper limit). Where there are dark organic growth layers, colours tend to be more vivid with additional absorption and scattering enhancing the iridescence. Turning this one in the light you can see the range of colours changing, blues, green and even the rare lavender pink! Very captivating and I can see why it is considered by some to be the most beautiful mother of ‘pearl’. Walking around the Vegas AGTA show and it was great see the @arkenstone_minerals with beautiful cases of some amazing minerals. This ‘devine’ aquamarine from them is stunning from the Shigar valley, Pakistan. As we know aquamarine is well known from here as producing some of the most spectacular specimens of the species and this one true to form - there is a lot of growth going on here! The two crystals growing together in this “cross” shape, good colour and as with many large crystals full of inclusions like ‘rain’ - parallel fine channels that are in fact growth tubes (negative channels) containing liquid, gas and crystallites, and as I have mentioned before, familiar ‘wispy veils’ - murky cloud like inclusions. However, on this also some great growth patterning almost like ‘herringbone’ on the larger flattened crystal picked up by the reflected light. The main thinner upright crystal has a fabulous termination and is partly inter grown with the other which appears thicker on one side and almost tabular in form. As I turn and look down the length of the crystal, such great colour and optical clarity! Throw in a little dusting of black tourmaline ‘schorl’ as well. In a ‘sea of gemstones’ and articles made from them at the show, nice to see this pristine ‘natures gem’ kept as is . What a great specimen don’t you think? #gems #gemmology #minerals #mineralogy #aquamarine #crystalgrowth #crystalpower #blue #natural #amazingnature #geology #gemshow #mineralshow #fineminerals #iloveminerals #science #natureart #instagood #agta

Amazing opal put into my hands by Uwe Barfuss at Gemgeneve. Apparently from the middle of a ‘Yowah nut’ those small rounded sandstone concretions impregnated with precious opal. However, most of the Yowah nut opals I have never seen look like this, and have posted before some similar looking opals from Lightning Ridge with this bizarre play of colour. Just look at this 60 carat polished opal. The ‘speckle’ play of colour transforms from a deep lavender, through red, then a pleasing orange and then through different orientations to green and then very deep blue. Very hard to capture but you get the idea, in hand simply amazing to look at and captivating! Be interested to hear any other opal experts thoughts on this one as seeing some very bizarre and unique pieces of late!
