But for now... ⭕️ These upside down bowls are at least 100 years old, used by my grandfather as a child. They’re from my maternal side ancestral house in a village in China, which has been unoccupied but preserved as is for decades. All the family members either immigrated to the US or passed on. My mom visited the house recently and picked out these ceramics for me. All hand painted of course, the floral design being typical. The other rather freeform swirly design is not what one would expect of an antique Chinese bowl! I imagine the artist had fun painting those. A circle composition, loosely based on Ying Yang, and definitely asymmetrical. I love the challenge of balanced asymmetry! ⭕️ Starting with koi positioning as they are the focus of the piece; off center yet flowing with the edge of the circle. Leaves arranged to counter balance the weight of the koi, with a greater leaf density at the edge. ⭕️ Leaves at the edge are greener, center leaves are yellower, to gently draw the eye towards the middle. Colors selected from my growing collection of Versafine and Versafine Clair ink pads. ⭕️ My attempt to explain the thinking behind the art! Usually I sit and stare at the various components: paper, stamps, circle - pushing stamps around and doing loose pencil sketches for 30–60 mins and visualizing things in my head when the pieces finally knit together. Continuing on from my last post, I thought I would share some more past work of mine. This was one of my ‘Ginkgo studies’ I completed back in 2014. I did a series of three small studies of Ginkgo branch tips at the time. They were around A3 size from memory. The thing I like the most about these works was how I photographed them. I usually shoot my work with professional studio lighting in a specific way (so my work is always consistent in its presentation) but I had these three pieces in the studio one morning when there was especially nice morning light. I was playing around with them in the light (because who doesn’t like early morning light) and ended up finding the perfect angle by leaning them on my old studio couch. The angle meant that the embroidery was lit by direct sunlight while the board was still in shadow (if that makes sense). The result was this lovely golden glowing image. I shared the ‘making of’ this piece a while ago but have been holding off posting the finished artwork. This blue ginkgo circle was commissioned as a gift for a 60th birthday present and I didn’t want to share it until after the recipient had birthday. Wouldn’t want to spoil her surprise. I love doing commissions for special occasions like this. I feel like I get to know the people who will eventually own my artwork a little bit and it makes the making of the artwork much more special for me. I have created artworks to help celebrate and commemorate weddings, anniversaries, graduations and birthdays.
