5 Ways a poor quality diet can cause depression & anxiety. . 1) Unbalanced blood sugars: When we eat sugary foods, processed foods & foods that have a high GI we can struggle with unbalanced blood sugars. Low blood sugars can lead to adrenaline surges & we can experience this as anxiety. To find out more check out one of my first YouTube videos "Blood sugars & Anxiety". Link in my bio. . 2) Brain inflammation: One of the latest theories of the causes of mental unwellness is inflammation. If our diets are inflammatory &/or we don't eat enough fish or other omega 3 rich foods, our bodies & therefore our brains can become inflammed. Eating small oily fish or supplementing with Omega 3 is a great strategy for improving mood. See me YouTube video on Omega 3 for more info. Link in bio. . 3) Nutrient deficiencies: We literally are what we eat. If we eat poor quality foods that don't have enough nutrients in them, our bodies can become deficient. Omega 3, vitamin B12, iron & folate deficiencies are a few of the causes of depression &/or anxiety. . 4) Oxidative stress: Oxidative stress is another theory of the underlying cause of mental unwellness. Oxidative stress is basically "rusting" of the brain (& body). We need antioxidants from our diet to help reduce this "rusting". Fruit & vegetables are amazing sources of antioxidants, so if we don't consume them it is one cause of unbalanced oxidative stress. . 5) Poor Gut Health: We need good gut health for good mental health. If we have the wrong balance of good to bad bugs (beneficial to opportunistic bacteria) in the gut it can basically send stress signals to the brain. So if we have a diet that feeds bad bugs (or starves good bugs) through eating too much sugar & not eating enough vegetables or fibre, we can promote a poor gut health. . Did you learn something new? If I had to choose one exercise to do everyday for the rest of my life it would definitely be sprints! I don't know of another exercise that can help build muscle, cut fat, enhance protein synthesis, lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve speed all in one. Not to mention, you can do them anywhere and it's a quick, intense workout! This week's @performixdriven workout is to do 10 sprints. Make sure you stretch and warm up before you get going! Run 40 meters down and back. Rest 1 minute between sprints.
