Since @cigarlover12 mentioned it was Macallan Monday, I finally have a reason to post about it. It’s ABOUT TIME that I put the whole puzzle together for the whisky world to see. The full set of Macallan Gran Reserva bottles: 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 12, and 15. As far as I know, I am one of a handful of people around the with the full set. Does anyone else know of someone? Unicorniquest - Episode 5 López de Heredia - Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva 2008. Just the bare notion of a barrel and bottle aged gran reserva rosé, made in only a few vintages which is then released about a decade after the harvest. Seriously, this is mad in the best possible way. Bright nose of cinnamon, old wood, tangerine peel, dried peach and candied strawberry yet with a fresh redcurrant fruitiness. None of the bruised apple type of oxidative notes here, only some gentle almond nuttiness. Bright red fruit and spice driven palate with Tondonia acidity that just keeps you going back to the glass. Love it. A pity I already finished my sixpack of the 2000 (picked up for 15 euro a bottle from my favourite kind of merchant, the knowledge challenged type) as I would have liked to have seen it further develop. With age they seem to be moving more towards the Tondonia blanco in terms of oxidative overripe quince-like aromas, not sure if that can be attributed to the viura as that only represents 10% of the blend. I would recommend drinking these between 12 and 15 years after the vintage when complexity has reached its peak without losing the fruit freshness. After that they turn into full savoury and umami mode, also fine if that’s your kind of thing as the acidity will always be there to save the day. Unfortunately today’s merchants have found out about the demand and started releasing these at near-criminal multiples of the humble release price. López de Heredia embodies about everything I like about wine, their immunity to trends and deep understanding that wine needs age and doesn’t need to be smothered in new oak. Where most of Rioja has moved into dubious directions, this is one of the very few estates that stayed true to their origins. Unicorn? Yes. Period. For me at least as there is simply nothing like it. Alegria de quem visitou uma vinícola pela primeira vez! Comecei com pé direito e a minha primeira vinícola (ou Bodega) como eles chamam lá na Espanha, foi a Marques de Murrieta, a mais antiga da região de Rioja, produz em sua maioria vinhos Reserva e Gran Reserva e tem um padrão de qualidade altíssimo! Enquanto outras focam em volume e giro, eles limitam a quantidade a apenas o que tiver de fato a melhor qualidade. Fiquei animada e já quero planejar visita à outras regiões de vinícolas! Tenho na minha lista Austrália/Nova Zelândia, Mendoza, França... alguém tem sugestões [] My first winery visit was to Marques de Murrieta, the oldest in Rioja and has a very high quality standard! While others focus on production volume, they limit the production to only what has the best quality. I already want to plan to visit other wineries!
