I'm pretty sure that RIP CITY and BLACK MAGIC are the same dahlia. The first photo is my known RC plant, I took a leaf set down to the other side of the garden where I purchased in BM and they're identical, and last picture is suppose to be BM. Which looks exactly like RC - I'm confidently going to change labels. I finally did it. I have a beautiful stand of Akitas after many years of so so success, aka failure. This variety doesn't get very tall, so I planted them at an end of a row. They get some shade from the apple tree, but don't seem to mind and are throwing crazy buds right now. The stem length is decent, but you do need to cut hard into the plant, also this variety likes to throw "trident" blooms, on each stem - so disbudding is a must. . . Fun fact, this variety is absolutely one of my favorites. I may have messed up a wee bit this year. I have this thing for ordering 2-3" burgundy blooms because there's atleast 5 varieties out there and they all look the same. Apparently I like small pom/ball dahlias too. From L to R: Odyssey, Stolz Von Berlin, Betty Ann, Sir Richard. Individual photos also, if you swipe. I'm crushing hardcore on Betty Ann and Odyssey. They're super prolific bloomers, altho BA is a shorter, compact bush; Odyssey is so tall, pushing 5' already. SVB & SR are very similarly sized, staying more compact thus far. SVB is more apt to bloom than SR, I like the lighter shade of pink but the blooms age quicker on the plant and the SR bloom is more uniform in shape and is holding longer. . (PS, sorry for the quick, dark photos.
