Tomorrow is day 1 of #aloasana101 and if you read my last post, you know that I’ve already hit the struggle bus The first #aloasana101 Pose is Adho Mukha Svanasana, or Downward Facing Dog. ⠀ “If you struggle with Down Dog, be compassionate and patient with yourself; you are not the first person with tight hamstrings or weak arms. On the other hand, be diligent. Ultimately, Down Dog will start to feel so good that you will really empathize with the full-body joy that dogs display while doing the pose.” -Shiva Rea ⠀ You hear “101” and think ‘basic.’ Well I learned very quickly that basic does not mean easy! Yes, if you practice yoga daily, you go into downward facing dog many times, but I doubt that you’re thinking about every little cue necessary in order to take a good photo in the posture. And here is my point- downdog is a foundational posture in most styles of yoga that does have many...many alignment based cues and these are all great to keep your body safe during your practice! But please don’t become obsessed with finding the perfect DD. Have fun during this challenge and explore the postures+feel free to find variations that you are working on. For example, in the first picture I decided to grab my foot in DownDog, which I have never before photographed ‍♀️ ⠀ During this challenge we will discuss alignment cues and “how to’s,” but try not to get hyper-critical We’re here to learn and to have fun along the way! ⠀ Some DD cues: 1) Press the floor away from you as you lift through your pelvis. As you lengthen your spine, lift your sit bones up toward the ceiling. Press down equally through your heels and the palms of your hands. ⠀ 2) Rotate your arms externally ⠀ 3) Draw your chest toward your thighs as you continue to press the mat away from you, lengthening your spine. *STRADDLE PRESS HANDSTAND DRILL* . #angelasyogatutorials . . If you are on the #QuestForThePress then you need to start doing this drill ASAP! . . 1. Place a bolster...(preferably one from @brentwoodhome that I helped to create...) and prop it up against the wall. Then place a small stack of blocks under your feet. . . 2. Place your fingertips in line with the edge of the bolster. Lean your back and shoulders into the bolster. . . 3. Press into your palms and straighten both arms. Spread your shoulders and draw your navel in and up as you knot your front ribs. . . 4. Come up onto your tip toes and press your hips to the wall as much as humanly possible. . . 5. If at this point your hips don't get light enough for you to press up go ahead and kick up. . 6. Take your legs in a wide semi-circle out to the sides and then down and around in front of your body. Try to inhale and tap the blocks and then go back up. . . 7. Count the number of times you can tap and work on it every day! . . Tell me how it goes! . .
