Cannabis is a very popular herb that has been used worldwide for ages, not just by witches and magicians. In the year 500 BC it was already known for its psychoactive qualities, for example in China. Nowadays many people smoke cannabis every now and then. The effects of cannabis also occur after eating it, for example as cannabis cake or chocolate. The effects occur only after 30 minutes to 2 hours. When you eat it, you have less control over the effects so always take just a little bit first and see what happens before eating more. A lot of people use cannabis for fun, but it’s also a medicinal remedy. Cannabis has an effect on different body functions: your mood, how you experience pain, memory, appetite, sleeping, immune system and muscular movement. This has everything to do with the fact that our endocannabinoid system (a network of receptors in the body) interacts with cannabinoids very easily, maintaining vital body functions. Besides smoking (of course not so good for your health) cannabis oils or ointments can be of used as a remedy. Nowadays it’s also possible to use oils that don’t have a psychoactive effect, cause the THC levels (Tetrahydrocannabinol) in it are very low. In these oils CBD (cannabidiol) does the trick. Cannabis oils with high THC levels are illegal in most countries. A doctor’s prescription is needed to get your hands on it, unless you make it yourself of course. In my tradition we sometimes use cannabis when doing rites. It’s such a shame I keep having to repeat myself over and over. My intention in speaking out on the subject of Witchcraft Aesthetics was not about critiquing how other Witches practice their craft. I spoke out on so much more. I spoke out on misinformation, I spoke out about false standards, I spoke up for beautiful makers and creators in the Witchcraft community who were forever being overlooked and I spoke up for any Witch that believes that Witchcraft is not some brand or fashion label. Yes, I said a lot in that video, and yes, meant a lot of what I said. But, I was simply expressing myself and how I feel. That video was a reflection of my own thoughts and my opinions and shared on my own platforms. When I spoke of Witchcraft Aesthetic, I wasn’t speaking to real, practicing witches who are busy doing their thing their way. Family tradition - The bone hag is one of the darker demons of our tradition. That’s why we learn to work with her at a pretty late stage of our course. The bone hag is connected to courage, strength and perseverance. She protects us when we work with 'lower' spirits, but she can also be treacherous if we cause her anger. That’s why we must exercise great caution when we summon her and treat her with utter respect. After our initiation to the inner circle we are encouraged to invoke this demon under the supervision of a more experienced wise woman only. Still it’s not forbidden to act alone. I didn’t want to get into trouble, so I invited my grandmother to my first rites involving the bone hag. The bone hag appears as an old woman with piercing dark eyes and long white hair. Her garment looks a bit shabby and she has very bony hands. The temperature always lowers a bit when she arrives and a weird smell that is difficult to describe fills the room. Often I cannot see her, I only detect her smell and feel the temperature drop. The bone hag tells us not to give up when things get difficult. If we show courage and perseverance something good will come out of our efforts. If we make mistakes, we can learn from them. We need to look at ourselves with a critical eye to learn, but also be aware of our qualities. Only then it is possible to turn our weaknesses into strengths. The bone hag teaches us to not to be stubborn. Though we shouldn’t give up what we started just like that, it is not very smart to go on if you know you made a wrong choice or walk the wrong road. Admit it if you made a mistake and you will be more successful in your attempts to reach your goals in life. The altar for the bone hag is decorated with objects we attach a personal, emotional value to. Apart from that we burn black candles for her and put a bowl filled with ash and bones on the altar. Offerings the bone hag accepts are of dark nature. Family Tradition | As promised I will tell you something about one of the most important initiations of our tradition. It’s all about entering the inner circle of the family. Most girls undergo this rite between their seventeenth and twentieth birthday and her mother and the elders of our family together decide if she is ready. In my case this meant I was allowed to enter the inner circle at seventeen. It’s a bit difficult to share the experiences I had at that time, cause I cannot talk about it in a detailed way. What I can tell you is that the rites involved are spread over a period of three days. The girl who is initiated does not eat during that time, she only drinks water. The first two days she spends in solitary confinement, although she is not completely left alone. There’s always someone around to check in with her from time to time. During the second night she is expected to perform a rite without the use of any tools. This is because we can easily do without tools, everything we need to perform magic is already there. The last day of the initiation the whole of the inner circle is present. The barriers between the girl and the otherworld are taken away by the elders. The skin around her eyes is painted black with charcoal to symbolize her widened view. The girl officially receives her dark veil (mine is in this picture), mostly handmade by her mother or grandmother, and her ritual knife. After that the demonic symbols are revealed to her, as well as her personal symbol. In the years following all family secrets are shared with her. It took me two years to memorize the demonic and other symbols we use and about five years to finish the whole of my course. After that my final rite of passage, to become a full member of the inner circle, was performed.
