It’s spring! And no one is thinking about winter - but it’s spruce cone time! With all the storms we had the cones fell down and can now be “harvested”. What do we do with them? They are great fire starters! We use them to make fire in our wood stove in the winter. Natural and free! #sprucecone #fichtezapfen #anzündmittel #anzünder #natürlicheanzünder #zapfen #cones #zapfenernte #coneharvest #firestarter #firestarters #naturalfirestarters #homesteading #homesteadinglife #homesteadingmama #homesteadingskills #homesteadingtips #hofleben #landleben #bauernhofleben #catsofinstagram #instacat #catstagram #katzenliebe

Calcium. Your chickens need it in order to produce eggs with strong & healthy shells. Some people buy oyster shells from their local feed-store, while others provide their hens with calcium using their chickens egg shells. Yup, you heard me, their own egg shells! After using eggs for a meal, we put the shells into a small pan that sits inside of the warming oven on top of our wood stove. This way, the egg shells dry out, making it easier for us to crack & grind them into small pieces for the chickens. We take the ground up egg shells to the coop and put them in a galvanized dish that is screwed to the wall. Animals know when they lack the vitamins and minerals their body needs, so naturally, they will eat all they need to fulfil their deficiencies. Giving back the eggshells to the chicken is an economical way of providing them with the nutrients they need

I was eager to get some dirt therapy today, so right after breakfast, I headed out to the garden to weed. I was nearly done with the main beds when BAM! Some sort of bee or yellow jacket stung me. My guess is it was resting on the ground and I didn't see it. Anyway, it stung me on one finger and it hurt like heck. So I tramped down to a different area of our property and grabbed some plantain. I picked a leaf, chewed it a bit, and applied it to the sting. Within about 1 minute, my finger felt better. A few minutes later, I had no pain at all. This trick works with both narrow leaf and broad leaf plantain.

Foxtail seed heads are abundant this time of year. I recently learned that the seed heads can penetrate the skin on dogs or cats and potentially cause serious injury. I am going to keep my dog away from this grassy-weed when I see it. - _ #cliftonhallfarms #protectthedog #wildgrass

Behold, the power of the “chum bucket” (as we like to call it) We keep a lidded plastic bucket in the fridge, and add all of our fruit and vegetable scraps to it all week. Peels, ends, squishy parts, egg shells, anything we wouldn’t eat but isn’t rotten or moldy or forbidden for chickens (like onions, citrus, avocado peels, etc.) goes into the chum bucket. Once a week, or once it gets full, it goes out to the chickens, and they lose their freaking minds over it. We also have a compost bucket, but it’s reserved for things we can’t feed the chickens. In the end, it all ends up in the same place when it goes into the compost pile, whether immediately or post chickens, but it feels even less wasteful doing it this way. Plus it gives us the opportunity to get a group photo of the chickens #chickentips Happy Saturday!

We added an automatic chicken door to the coop. Opens up at sunrise and closes at sunset. see link in my profile for the one we bought. Aside from a few ventilation cutouts I think we are done with coop modifications for now. Eventually I do want to paint it this spring. I also want to put together some kind of PVC rainwater system to reduce the frequency of having to refill their water, but that’s at least a few months away as well. I stopped at the feed store. They have baby chicks and Mike already okay’d getting more. Just a few more that lay blue and olive eggs would be cool. Debating if I want to raise chicks this spring or wait till next year #automaticchickendoor #chickencoop #chickens # #chickencoopsofinstagram #chickencoops #chickencoopdoor #automaticcoopdoor #pnwchickens #chickencoops #backyardchickencoops #coopdoors #homesteadingtips #homesteadtips #chickenhouses #chickencoopbuilding #projectchickencoop
