SUFFERING AND STRUGGLING DOES NOT MEAN LOVE - I am sure this is going to rub some folks the wrong way, but it has to be said as so many folks are needlessly struggling that do not need to be. Many times the answers are there for them, but they choose to struggle with their dogs under the idea that the suffering, and struggling, and taking a long time to “fix” an issue is because they love their dog. So the longer the owner struggles, the more they love their dog. - We see this response in many of our posts when we talk about an owner who has struggled with a dog’s unwanted behavior for a long period of time- often years and years of struggle. That is easily and quite often interpreted that “the owner must really love their dog a lot.” - So does that mean folks that don’t struggle don’t love their dog? Or don’t love their dog as much as the struggling person? Does that mean that folks that do the hard work quickly instead of avoiding it love their dogs any less? - I don’t think so. When did struggling and suffering for long periods of time become a measurement of love? Sometimes someone is struggling with a dog, meanwhile, they are losing their relationship with a loved one, having to move out of a home because of a dog’s behavior, alienating friends and family, not paying bills and putting all of their funds into the dog. Is that love? Love for whom? - As much as I love my dogs, I will always choose me first. I will always choose my family first. If those things are not strong, I cannot do my best job helping my dog in the best way possible. - Many times there is also no reason to actually be struggling. The answers are there, but the answers may be out of an owner’s comfort zone. The exact answer that will stop the struggling. So if we really do love our dogs, why are we not doing what works? Why are we continuing to do what does not work? - Stopping most unwanted behaviors does not take a long time- sometimes minutes, hours or days, but not years. Stopping an unwanted behavior quickly is one of the greatest acts of love you can bestow not only on your dog, but on YOU as well.
