I feel like Eileen Donan Castle must be the most photographed castle in Scotland. It’s like on every postcard! We stopped here on the last day of our @rabbies_tours, on the way back to Edinburgh. . Personally, I do not think the castle is worth the entry fee to actually go in, but it is fun to go around and find different angles to photograph it from around the loch. Fun fact: the current castle standing there was only built in the early 1900s! . When you’re near here, make sure to also stop by Manuela’s Wee Bakery just down the road for some of their pastries. They’re sooooo good, and the place looks like a German fairytale village! . What’s your favorite castle you’ve ever been to? I think mine is probably Conway Castle in Wales (which you can find under my RSJSinWales hashtag), but Eilean Donan is definitely up there because of just how photogenic it is! The idea of any kind of explosive volcanic activity might send shivers down your spine, but there’s no denying that what’s left behind is always breathtakingly beautiful and Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland is a simple example. Made up of 40,000 basalt columns in varying shapes and sizes, this UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site formed when lava hit the cool waters of the North Atlantic after a volcanic eruption at least 50 million years ago. The name comes from a local legend which suggests that the rocky formation was actually built by a giant named Finn MacCool who intended to build a causeway to reach Scotland to fight his enemy Benandonner. Feeling like a real life fairy on the edge of the Fairy Pools ‍♀️ ✨ A visit to this stunning place seriously gives you all of the myths and legends vibes - magical beings living under bridges and water sprites living in the pools. The water is seriously a beautiful blue in real life, the shade depending on how much water flow there is and how the sunlight is on the water on a sunny day, the water is so clear that you can see to the bottom of the pool! The water is very cold though, since it’s fed by mountain streams. ✨ These are considered the ‘fake’ fairy pools they are easily accessed from a nearby car park and aren’t as large and impressive as the ‘real’ fairy pools, that can only be accessed by a small hike through the Glen Brittle forest. While they aren’t as impressive as the other fairy pools, they are still magical and absolutely stunning!! When I first showed this photo to a friend, he thought it looked like something out of a Tolkien novel ✨ The hike to the ‘real’ fairy pools is a 2 hour return hike. Park at Glumagan Na Sithichean, cross the public road to find the path labeled "Sligachan,". Several small river crossings are required and ground can be slippery when wet. Take care and wear appropriate clothing and footwear! ✨ These fairy pools are a short walk from the car park and very close to the youth hostel so perfect if you’re short on time or you don’t want to hike. They are definitely well worth a visit! ✨ What magical beings could you imagine here?
