We love to categorize, don’t we? We like putting everything into little mental boxes so it’s easier to make sense of the world. Organizing the chaos of life into distinction parts at least gives some semblance of order, that much is obvious. The problem is when we try to categorize people, too. Anyone reading this, as well as I, am most certainly guilty of – at least occasionally – defining people not by their individuality but by some other manner of identification. You may find out an acquaintance is a social justice warrior and immediately drop the connection because you assume he or she is overly sensitive and overzealous about certain issues. Or perhaps you’re the one suffering from unjust labels. You’re Malay so people think you’re lazy by default. You’re Chinese so you’re most likely to sell out your family for a tidy profit. You’re Indian so you spend more time drunk than sober. I may be using hyperbole, but these are relatable examples to many. People jump the gun and evaluate your entire worth on a couple of stereotypes. I’ve studied BaZi for many years, and what it’s taught me is that people and their lives are unique. Even people with identical BaZi charts can live very different lives, so you’d be stupid to assume two seemingly similar individuals definitely belong in the same box. Some people still won’t get the memo, and that’s fine. The next time someone tries to put you in the box, take a real box and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.
