It is the eve of the Irish dancing Nationals and I've got a great competitor to introduce you to! Meet my talented, hard-working #danceroftheday, Ms. Megan Stella (@meganstella_13_ ). .____________ How she got started: "When I was younger there were# IrishDancers on the TV show: @thewiggles and I would watch it over and over again. So, my mom finally decided to sign me up for classes and I fell in love with it and so I stuck with it!" She says. "I dance with the @mcinerneydance School of Irish Dance which I’ve been training with since I was three years old!" __________ What she's currently working on: "I am currently training for the North American Nationals @naidc2019 in July, which I came in 2nd in last year!" Says Megan. ____________ On her triumphs: "Some of my favorite accomplishments are being 2x #Oireachtas champion, 12th at the #Worlds and 2nd at #Nationals. Achieving those after working my hardest makes me even happier than the achievement itself because of all the work I put in." ____________ On what's upcoming!: "I’m most excited for nationals because it’s always been one of my favorite competitions and I can’t wait to see all my friends in #Vancouver! I always have the most fun at Nationals no matter the outcome." ___________ Advice for dancers: "Never lose sight of what you want because it’s always achievable if you put the work in. Dreams and goals are so important to driving you to do your absolute best, and never forget to have fun because when you are enjoying yourself onstage, that’s when you do your best."

A study conducted by the Irish Medical Times from researchers at the @universityoflimerick found that injuries in Irish dancers occur at a much higher rate than other forms of dance. But we're only just beginning to understand the complexities of this. My #danceroftheday today hit an injury at a very inconvenient time in her training. But she was patient and smart about her recovery, and is doing great today! Meet Heidi (@heidilhawkes), of the Kidd school (@thekiddschool) of #irishdance in Birmingham! ____________ What she's currently working on: "I'm perfecting my three new dances: Jig, slip Jig and my new set. I'm trying to get back to full fitness after having problems with my knee. I wish to accomplish my dream of becoming a world medal holder next year!" _____________ On dealing with competition nerves: "I never watch the people who dance before me as I try to stay focused on my dances and try to enjoy being on stage." _____________ On her challenges: "Picking up an injury in the run up to Worlds really upset me and obviously messed up my training." Heidi did say she'd been working hard with a physical therapist and made tremendous progress! _____________ On her dreams: Heidi has one dream and it's a big one... To win World's! _____________ Advice for dancers: "Always work hard, listen to your teachers at all times because they are the ones who know best after all Be yourself and don't compare yourselves to other dancers! Find your own style!" _____________ #thegirlinblack

I have been doing the #PositivityProject for over 1 year now. In that time, I've been fortunate to "meet" some pretty incredible people. @ian.luebbers of @hollyandkavanagh, who passed away suddenly on June 11th, was only 24-years old. That's only 13 years older than me. He was a very well known #WorldChampion #irishdancer, & though I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I always get vibes from the people I talk to. This is what I learned from Ian: #1: He was incredibly kind & respectful. Not everyone is interested in answering an 11-year-old's constant questions. But he was patient with me. #2: He didn't seem focused on his trophies. While he deeply seemed to ♥️ dancing, he was not someone who spent a lot of time talking about what he'd won. He was more interested in sharing the knowledge that he had gained. He seemed to want to pass on that knowledge. #3: He didn't strike me as loving all the pomp & circumstances of competitive dancing. He seemed more drawn to the simpler things about it There were a lot of things he mentioned in my original interview that talked about "mindset". At the ⏲️ he was training for World's (which he won). He wrote that he was "letting go of attachment to the outcome." I ♥️'d that. #4: You can always tell so much about a person by the outpouring of ♥️ from friends, family & teachers. I have read every single post that I can find. Clearly, Ian made his impact. I lost someone suddenly in Jan 2018, & I know the feeling of the world stopping & moving on at the same time. It doesn't seem fair. Ian, I wish I'd gotten the chance to meet you. I wish I'd seen you dance in person. Thank you for giving me the chance to tell your story, even if it was just a small piece. This was his advice for dancers: "Whether you win the World’s or fall off the stage, nothing that happens in dancing - good or bad - reflects your inherent worth. It all just reflects your mindset & how you see yourself. Change the way you see yourself and you’ll change the way you dance."

My #danceroftheday, who trains with Glencastle Irish Dancers @glencastleirishdancers, is busily preparing for the Irish Dancing World Championships in Vancouver this July. She trains 5 days a week & peppers that at home with some super sweet @targettrainingdance (fun fact: I actually met my dancer of the day at a Target Training workshop!) Meet Erin Malloy (@erinmalloyy) _______________________ How she got started: "I started Irish dancing because my two older sisters did it. I actually quit after a few months because I liked soccer better. Then I came back because I missed it so much!" _______________________ What she's currently working on: "Right now I’m healing a stress injury in my foot while still training as much as I can for NAIDC 2019." Says Erin. "I’m working specifically on power, crossing my legs, and new steps!" ________________________ On competition nerves: "In the weeks leading up to competitions, after #danceclass I either listen to an affirmations podcast while stretching, or we do one all together at the end of class! I also practice writing #affirmations and visualize all 3 of my rounds going perfectly using the imagery recording on the @TargetTrainingdance online institute. I visualize the #stage, the venue, wearing my costume, everything. Giving 150% at every #dance class, practice at home, or workout also helps my nerves because, once I’m at the competition, I know I have done everything I need to do to prepare. When I experience nerves the night before a competition, I try to distract myself. I find that thinking of the dancing right before I go to sleep makes me stay awake. I usually read, listen to music, & do muscle relaxation to help me fall asleep. The day of the competition I control my nerves by visualizing my dances, listening to music that gets me pumped up, & talking to my teachers. They usually tell me that the hard work is done and now I get to go on stage & show the judges what I’ve been working on!" _______________________ Advice for dancers: "Never give up on your goals, no matter how many things get in your way or how long it takes. Having a positive mindset and believing in yourself does more than you think."
