Early on in my teaching career, I felt the need to please people and go along with what others were doing in their classroom. Part of that was because I was still unsure of myself as a teacher, and part of that was because I wanted to make sure I still had a job by the end of the year. I didn’t like saying no to things either like committees, curriculum, coaching, etc. . Fast forward to today. I feel more confident in the classroom. When our ELA team plans together, I have the courage to speak up if I have new ideas, suggestions, or concerns. When asked if I want to coach or be on a committee, I don’t feel bad saying no. I don’t worry about pleasing others. I have found my crew of teachers in my school and through social media who will support me through thick and thin. I am not afraid to try new things. I know that some lessons will be a success while others will flop, and I’m okay with that. I am not, and will never be, a perfect teacher. In episode 5 called “Classroom Libraries 101,” Jillian talks about ways to organize your library, how to fund your library, and helping students pick out books without restrictions. She also talks about her own school experience when she wasn’t allowed to read certain books because they weren’t in her “green turtle” reading group bin. Remember, reading levels aren’t meant to be shared with students or parents. They are meant for teachers to use within guided reading groups. And this truth comes directly from Fountas and Pinnell. During independent reading time, students should have the freedom to pick out ANY book they want. They should be checking out the cover, reading the book jacket, previewing the first few pages of the book; not searching for the level on the spine, on the inside of the book, or their leveled bin. I’ve heard some teachers and parents mention that graphic novels aren’t real books. Well, last time I checked, a graphic novel has a front and back cover and pages with words and pictures in between. Sounds like a real book to me! While we are on the subject, graphic novels are for people of all ages, young and old! For me, I read graphic novels when I need a break from chapter books. They are quick to read, and it makes me feel like I accomplished something when I finish a GN. Plus, students have to use more critical reading skills than you think while reading a graphic novel: comprehension, inferencing, sequencing, interpreting characters’ nonverbal gestures, etc. And who cares if students have already read a specific graphic novel before. I rewatch tv shows and movies all the time because I enjoy them so I see no harm in a student rereading a book for enjoyment either! Friends, this may be the single greatest thing I have ever done in my career!!⁣ ⁣ My tests almost always come out to 3 pages. I have no idea why. But I can't squish them on to two, and stretching it out to four is...a stretch. ( Oh I crack myself up!)⁣ ⁣ It drives me crazy how antsy the kids get when the finish, but not everyone is done yet! I don't collect tests until everyone is done to avoid the test anxiety when like 10 people all finish at the same time and you're still on the 1st page. ⁣ So, this semester, I started putting SQUIGGLES on the blank back page! Anyone ever do these in elementary school I am not a very good drawer, and I have a hard time coming up with what to draw. But give me a starting place and I can come up with something!⁣ ⁣ I use the Hello Fine Motor Skills font from @helloliteracy and pick a design that looks fun, put it in a text box, and rotate it around to the position I want it in! It is so fast and so easy, and SO FUN!! I don't want to overload you with pictures here, so I'll post more doodles in my stories and save them to a highlight so you can check them out!⁣ ⁣ Let me know if you try this and how it goes!!
