The eighth saree in April is my #OdetoBengal in this lovely #linen saree from Bengal, with polka dots all over, and two beautiful peacocks gracing the Pallu. The blouse is an old silver tissue with a tie-up back. I accessorized it with some Afghani jewellery and brass jhumkas. .

It was the perfect saree for the National Committee Meet of the Confederation of Women Entrepreneurs (COWE) in Ghaziabad as the to & fro travel was almost an hour and a half each side, and the meet lasted all day. What’s more, I even managed to watch a late night show of ‘Avengers: End Game’ after getting back at around 10pm! .

And with this saree, I finally managed to #complete8sareeapril2019 initiated by @thesurrealsagittarian . (Saree 22/2019) .

For the last couple of years, we’ve celebrated the husband’s birthday weekend by joining other people marching for basic human freedoms, equality and social justice, all slowly but surely being eroded in this country. That would be followed by a lovely dinner. This year however, work travel and the unpredictable weather this weekend played spoilsport and he had to leave this afternoon earlier than planned for a week long trip.
.
So, we turned his birthday dinner into a brunch, which meant we missed the march. A real bummer, especially as it continues to be important to make our voices heard.
.
Frustratingly, this years Women’s march was mired in controversy because of perceived anti-semitism by a couple of the original leaders and discord amongst the organizers of the marches. Many women refused to march and a couple of cities planned rival marches. Why, why do we do this? The march is so much bigger than any of the organizers and has brought millions of diverse people out on the streets since it’s inception to protest the carnage caused by this presidency. Why then, are we willing to so easily tear each other down and ultimately do ourselves, the collective us, a disservice? Unity first.
.
A weave I’ve always been intimidated by, the regal Kanjeevaram, was my saree du jour. A deep raspberry pink kattam checked with rows of black stripes, some thick and straight, some thin and wavy, overlapping with gold zari checks, and a luscious no zari Korvai border and pallu in #ramabluegreen, that stubbornly refused to photograph well, looking more blue than green. While I love drooling over the more opulent, heavy zari worked kanjis on others, they overwhelm my petite frame, so when I saw this simple and chic saree, it instantly won we over. Worn with a kantha blouse, the stitches in black and pink picking up the colors of the saree, and accessorized with many strands of an upcycled silk necklace.
.
Feeling a little less frustrated, and a little more hopeful at the end of the day.

Was off for a week of work travel and have much catching up to do here, but the warmer temps yesterday meant I could pull out this lovely cotton and join in for #andhamainatelugucheera, to highlight one of the lesser known weaves from this state, that together with Odisha, creates some of my absolute favorite weaves and crafts. We’re back to cold and rainy today, but we had to make hay while the sun shone, no?
.
The Kuppadam is woven in the East Godavari region of Andhra and is traditionally all cotton with a zari border and heavy pallu. The saree I’m wearing is a contemporary twist, and has a cotton body with silk borders. Pink shot with black for a lovely jamun color with silver zari checks and silk ganga jamuna borders. Can easily be dressed up or down. This is one of the few sarees I’ve bought in person; being able to see, touch and drape a saree before buying is a luxury for someone like me that lives abroad. And I was luckier still to meet the woman herself who works closely with weavers in the many clusters all over the country to create these beauties, @remakumar, at her beautiful new studio.
.
Worn with a fun chanderi blouse printed in bright neon colors that looks like hand sketched art, a favorite from @studiobhang that I hadn’t pulled out in a while. Threw in some more pops of color with these new juttis that have the cutest pompoms from @pastelsandpop that are going to be a spring and summer favorite. I bought these last year and have been dying to wear them out, so yay for that!

When the weather is as temperamental as the weekend subway schedule, you dress a little for the winter and a little for spring.
.
This is for Lalli’s #kanthastitchsareeweek, even if it meant cheating to take advantage of the broader definition that included all hand embroidery! A dreamy gossamer chanderi adorned with simple kantha checks and delicate pink cherry blossoms hand embroidered all over the saree, a favorite buy from a couple of years ago. A lovely reminder of spring, when new life is returned to the land whence it was taken away. The grey silk blouse mirroring the gentle snow flurries we’ve had this year and the kantha bib necklace with birds, another signal of springtime, the arrival of starlings in our part of the globe. Hoping for a decent spring this time as we were robbed last year!
.
Last Saturday, we decided to do something different and joined another couple downtown for an improv show, unlike anything we had seen before. An improv show for geeks - Science, exclamation point - I mean, with a title like that, it was just begging for us to attend. Two sets, first a lecture with a PowerPoint presentation (!) by a scientist on a really complex topic, like the part of our brain that controls our social responses and testing that in mice, and, the effect of gravitational waves and space time and measuring that on earth. Each lecture inspired an improv act, and to see how creative the comics got, how quickly they thought on their feet, and how well they applied these complex principles to every day life and events, was both brilliant and hilarious. Switching between scientific presentation and improv felt as weirdly temperamental as this weather.

Saree is from @kanellehq and necklace from @by_paulami. Check out Stories for a closer look at the necklace and scroll to the end to see how I wore the saree last time.

A special Easter Sunday
.
At the Brooklyn Museum and next door at the Botanical Gardens when the sun finally decided to grace this part of the earth. An exhibition I’ve been waiting to go to for months, that needed advance tickets, the most expansive Frida Kahlo exhibit in the US in a decade. An exhibit not just of her paintings, of which there are but a few on display, but one that traces her life and carefully cultivated identity through her life, her debilitating injuries, her politics, her marriage to Diego Rivera, her art and her unique sense of style. Told through her exquisite collection of traditional Tehuana/Oaxacan clothing that she preferred, spine-straightening corsets and prosthetics that were turned into a canvas for her art, jewelry and other personal possessions, which were rediscovered in 2004 after being locked away since her death in 1954, alongside important drawings, many beautiful photographs through the ages and her paintings.
.
Whether she was a better artist than her husband is open to debate and opinion, but she certainly made a bigger and more lasting impact, her mystique, charisma and ability to defiantly rise above her pain to embrace beauty and whimsy, captivating millions. It's hard to imagine she once was in her husband’s shadow; even when she had her first New York exhibition in 1938, Vogue referred to her as Madame Diego Rivera. Cut to the Fridamania of today, she seems to have had the last word.
.
I’m wearing an Eri silk golden yellow beauty woven in a Kota Doria like checked weave using silver zari, with a Ganga jamuna selvedge and a richly textured pallu from @ereenainternational. Dressed down with a rainbow hued checked tunic from @nicojournal. Scroll to see my delicate silver earrings bought in Mexico detailed with flowers and hummingbirds, and imagine my thrill when I saw a similar earring in Kahlo’s collection included in the exhibit.
.
If you keep scrolling, there are a few pictures of the stunning tulips that were in bloom in the gardens. Some glorious varieties that you typically don’t get to see. We didn’t end up cooking Easter dinner this year, the joy of the museum and gardens sufficed.

ever walked into a design college and wondered what makes everyone there so awesomely sartorial?
Because we study fashion, or design? that's scratching the surface. There's no 'learning' a sense of style. It's because self expression, instead of the male gaze (ahem: another way to say "conventional"), becomes our norm ✨
