Road To Dark Phoenix: X2 (2003) . . If 2000's X-Men was a competent introduction, X2 presents itself as its superior & more confident counterpart. I've maintained this since its release in 2003, X2 is one of the better sequels ever made & it's still one of my favorite comic book movies ever made as well. While Hugh Jackman is still at the forefront as Wolverine, the movie is a more balanced ensemble effort that gives others the opportunity to shine (except you Cyclops, James Marsden still can't catch a break here). Despite how we may feel about Bryan Singer today, he directs the film with a sure hand & makes the film achieve true blockbuster status with several scenes that top any of the action sequences in the original. The Nightcrawler opening sequence in the White House still stands as one of the best sequences in a comic book film while the attack on the X-Mansion is another standout along with Pyro's barrage on several police officers. Neil Patrick Harris auditioned for the role of Nightcrawler, but lost out to Alan Cumming, who speaks fluent German. . . 2. The replica of the President's desk in the Oval Office was so detailed, that it took two months to build. . . 3. Sir Ian McKellen (Magneto) worked with the Screenwriters to make the scene in which Bobby Drake (Iceman) tells his parents he is a mutant, to look more like a common gay "coming-out" scene. . . 4. Cumming did not want to return as Nightcrawler in a subsequent film because the makeup process was too intense for his minimal amount of appearances in X2. . . 5. Kelly Hu has only one line of dialogue in the entire movie. . . 6. Unlike the first movie, where Rebecca Romijn-Stamos wore contact lenses, this time, Mystique's eyes are rendered digitally. . . 7. The X-Men story "God Loves, Man Kills" from 1982 was an influence on much of the script. . . 8. Road To Dark Phoenix: X-Men (2000) . . With Dark Phoenix coming out Friday, I'm looking back at the nearly 20 year old franchise beginning with 2000's X-Men. I rewatched it again last night & still found it quite enjoyable although it's interesting to see how much these films have changed over the years. There is enough action in X-Men but it's scope is much smaller than the comic book films that would follow. Even the climax is more subdued than most. . . I think that Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, & Anna Paquin are the acting standouts here and Famke Janssen is also good but she doesn't get as much to do. This is also the case with James Marsden & Halle Berry who don't get to do much at all although they each get a fun action moment that stands out. I also think the film could've been a tad longer. It's only an hour and 44 minutes & the conclusion feels a tad rushed because of that. . . In the end it's a nice start for the X-Men universe & while it may be a bit dated now, it's still a fun introduction to the characters we know and love. Are you a fan of X-Men? Sound off! The kid was a huge X-Men fan & couldn't help but smile so on one take James Marsden smiled back & they kept it in the film. . . 2. The filming was rearranged so Ian McKellen could film this & be done in time to start filming The Lord of the Rings. . . 3. Hugh Jackman took cold showers every morning of filming to get into character. . . 4. Neither Sir Patrick Stewart nor Sir Ian McKellen knew how to play chess during filming. A chess master came in to teach them. . . 5. To celebrate her last day on set Rebecca Romijn brought tequila for cast & crew. This was also the day of her fight with Wolverine so she ended up throwing up all over Hugh Jackman. . . 6. The mansion used for the Xavier School was the Madison mansion in Billy Madison, the Luther mansion on Smallville & the Queen Mansion on Arrow. . . 7.
