"Her definition of romance was absent minded intimacy. The way someone's hand stray to your plate of food." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I have lost count of the times I have read this book, it's an all time favorite, the one book you keep going back to, knowing that reading it will bring a weird sense of comfort and familiarity, this is that book for me. Some friend tagged me in a post where Kamila shamsie was quoted from Kartography and I felt like reading this book again, it has been some time since I reread it. #bookstagrampak #shadows #goldenhour #chasinglight #bookreview #bookphotography #bookporn #bookishfeatures #bookstagram #greeninmygrid #lightroom #snapseed #shotonmia1 #nothingisordinary #unitedbookstagram #igkarachi #dawndotcom #travelread #kamilashamsie #kartography

If I have to describe kartography’s ending in one word it would be: frustrating. This book lies somewhere in the top 5 favourites and it was a solid 5/5 stars for me until I read the last two pages. GOD it still hurts. This book is so close to my heart. I’ll carry a piece of it with me forever. “The truths we conceal don’t disappear Raheen” this line is etched on my heart. The words literally runs in the blood, okay here’s another quote : For a second I was almost jealous of the clouds. Why was he looking to them for an escape when I was right here beside him?. Beautiful just beautiful. (not being over dramatic. My love for this book is eternal. You might not like it that’s totally okay because I believe in difference of opinion) If you have read this book, share your favourite quote (pls do it) Love you all. Have a good weekend. Kush rahein, kush rakhein. ✨ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #quotes #kamilashamsie #kartography

I am so excited to announce the pick for our first ever read-along in March . Kartography by Kamila Shamsie . It has been described as "a love story with a family mystery at its heart" in its @goodreads synopsis. "Raheen and her best friend, Karim, share an idyllic childhood in upper-class Karachi. Their parents were even once engaged to each others' partners until they rematched in what they call "the fiancée swap." But as adolescence distances the friends, Karim takes refuge in maps while Raheen searches for the secret behind her parents' exchange. What she uncovers reveals not just a family's but a country's turbulent history-and a grown-up Raheen and Karim are caught between strained friendship and fated love." . "Is love stronger when it lets go or when it holds on?" Kamila Shamsie, Kartography. . Kamila Shamsie writes a story about two sets of friends in Karachi, Pakistan. One in the 90's and one in the 70's. Both times ethnic warfare was part of the political rhetoric and both times innocent people suffered and lost amidst the strikes and violence. Not many people know this outside the sub-cobtinent that Bangladesh was part of Pakistan when it was originally created in 1947. It was called East Pakistan. In 1971 it was separated and became an independent country. Frankly, I also had little knowledge of the background as this was all before I was even born. I had never read about it and bravo to @kshamsie for writing this enlightening story. . Karim and Raheen are inseparable since birth. Their parents are extremely close as well but in the past their mothers did a "fiance swap" and married the other's fiance. Their back story is revealed in the chapters set in the past when Pakistan was about to lose one of its wings, East Pakistan. . As the children grow in the 90's so does the political and ethnic unrest in Karachi with people being killed by the dozen on a daily basis. Karim's parents decide to abandon ship and move to UK against their friends' wishes. Karim and Raheen separate for the first time which in turn creates a disconnect for years to come. This is a coming of age story where life takes them to different places, on to different interests. When finally their friendship and love is put to the test as the shocking secret about their parents is revealed. . Shamsie has used Karachi as a character here and I loved reading about it's history, the sights and sounds, its beauty its heart and soul. It made me homesick and I'm not even from Karachi The book also reminded me of the recent Normal People, as we had two people who loved each other but kept missing signals. It also had shades of the bollywood movie Ye Jawani Hai Deewani All in all a well written book, full of intriguing background history and well etched characters. . Thank you @readingpakistan for hosting this readalong . #kamilashamsie #kartography #bookstagram #readingpakistan #bloomsburypub
