Meet Berlange Presilus (@bellenge), a fashion model born with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS). KTS is a rare malformation that affects the development of blood vessels and soft and bone tissues. It can result in skin ulcers and intense physical pain. Berlange hid her diagnosis until last year due to negative reactions from the fashion industry. But it hasn’t stopped her from speaking out about the rare disorder and often unattainable standard of beauty that many are trying to live up to within the industry. “I had to make a decision to stop living in fear to be my best self or continue to go down the road of self-hate and depression,” she wrote in an email. “I am standing my ground and from there I wish to build up a few souls, inspire them to love and accept themselves as I finally did.” She adds in the above video: “Yes, I have a syndrome, I was born with it. Today isn't the best day for me but i promise to make the best out of it. #affirmation I am filled with gratitude putting my speech together for my next appearance at David Suzuki Secondary School. I am super excited to meet all of the students (side note: I wonder why we never had any speakers in my school. The worst lie i used to tell myself is____ I am okay, it doesnt hurt..I am fine as if it was a sin to admit that i was not. I didnt want anyone to know what i was going through. But those very words left me feeling alone and depressed until I decided to own my truth outloud and boldly. • • On this day forward, I want you to know that you are not alone! Speak your truth, be honest.It's okay to not be okay and it's also okay to own your truths. Through and through I stand with you!
