Abri came home from school beaming with pride over a certificate she got in PE today! The kids were awarded “half certificates” if they ran half of all the runs in PE this year in class and “full certificates” if they ran all the runs this year. Abri received a FULL certificate!!! This is the girl who sat out of PE for 2nd grade and 3rd grade because of her wheelchair and crutches and this year RAN EVERY SINGLE RUN!!! I’m blown away by what she has accomplished this year. Abri has taken her life back and she is not wasting one single second of it! This was 3 years ago today! Abri finally got to take her first steps after being in a wheelchair for 9 months. That was all she wanted that year for her birthday. Look how crooked her poor leg was. She did eventually get to walk with a cane and then nothing at all but she never walked very well. And then the broken femur happened in October and everything seemed to just go down hill from there until she amputated 2 years later. I am so thankful she made that choice. Freaking LOVE this picture by @sherrycomella_photography!!! Why is this picture so amazing? Abri’s “stumpy” was built using her ankle bone and part of her fibula which gave her a below the knee limb. She was supposed to be a through the knee because she had hardly any tibia bone left below her knee. What her dream team at @mayo pulled off was a miracle and something they had never done before. It is all held together with screws and plates and required some skin grafts but it worked!!! In the amputee world being a below the knee instead of a through knee or above knee makes a big difference especially when it come to being able to dance. What that also means is that being strong enough to stand on her blade took some serious time, effort and working through A LOT of pain. When she started she could only stand for a couple seconds. Now she can stand for several minutes!
