I gave a speech today for the first time since losing my leg. It was, in many, ways a huge victory for me today. I got to stand up, even if it wasn’t in the way I had hoped, and tell part of my story. In the midst of many defeats, there are victories. In short - nothing has gone according to plan with my leg. By now, according to “what normally happens”, I should be walking well, hiking even, at very least using a prosthetic most of every day. But now seven months out from amputation, I have no working prosthetic, and no answers are in sight. Issues and unusual prolonged pain continue with my residual limb and I’m waiting on appointments and doctors. I have no idea what is next, how to properly hold onto hope, or when I’ll be able to move forward in the way I am so desperate to progress. But in this weird period of uncomfortable waiting, I think it’d be a waste not to take advantage of the things I do have. To recognize the small successes, even if they aren’t the ones I want. These months have been a massive practice in finding patience and learning to control expectations. I’d be remiss not to recognize that this is a time of great richness, even though many moments are simultaneously agony. So today, I got to stand up in front of an audience, missing a leg, and I didn’t feel weird doing it. I felt like myself. I just felt like Jo. Today, I recognize and appreciate that victory. I don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring or when answers will come, but in the in-between, I’m going to keep trying to practice the mindfulness to recognize the beautiful moments.

What a lot of people don’t know about me is that I dropped out of high school my sophomore year. Shortly after that I landed a job as an electrical apprentice (thanks to the homie Ali,(RIP)) working for a company based out of Emeryville. About eight months later I returned to school—a continuation high school—home to delinquents and parenting teens. I spent the next year and a half at El Rancho Verde, known to us as the Ranch. Lacking the necessary credits to graduate and with my senior year up, I was forced to leave school without a high school diploma. Two years later I found the motivation to pursue my G.E.D passing the exam on my first try. I realize today that my prospects for a bright future were dim early on. Born to a fifteen-year-old Mexican mother and an absent teenage father, I faced a lack of academic preparation and role models growing up, unable to avoid the politics of the streets, becoming a teenage father myself, and losing my leg in a tragic motorcycle accident. Despite these barriers I was able to fulfill my dream of becoming a college graduate, the first in my family. There’s no question that my journey has been long and arduous, but I have stayed the course while demonstrating grit, tenacity, and fortitude. And it is through my journey, informed by my experiences, along with my hunger to advance equity and justice for underserved communities, that I have chosen to pursue a graduate degree in public policy. It is with great humility that I am happy to say that I will be starting a Master’s program this fall at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. This monumental achievement in my life would not have been possible without the support of those who believed in and took a chance on me over the years. To all of you, I am eternally grateful. Following graduation and, informed by the experiences of close relatives and my community at large, I would like to transition into direct policy advocacy working to address and reduce the disproportionality of people of color at all levels of the criminal injustice system. @_dangerfield_ #myucberkeley

Sometimes the simplest movements can feel like the hardest. • One of the hardest parts about boxing for me is being able to shift my weight between my legs without losing my balance. Put that on top of trying to actually use correct boxing technique and by the end of a session my mind can be . • Yep, it’s difficult. Also, when I first started boxing I didn’t think this simple movement was even possible for me, and I told the trainers I couldn’t twist into a punch or put any weight on my right side. • So....difficult as it is to learn these movements, it’s pretty flipping cool for me to compare how far I’ve come from 3 years ago. • Celebrate the little things!!
