When I discovered aerial, it was the first time in my life where I felt something made sense. If I was having a bad day it all disappeared while I was in the air because I was so focused on what I was doing and how I was feeling I forgot where I was. I realised a few years later that aerial actually cleared my mind of any thought just like meditation and that you don’t have to sit still in order to experience it. . As there are so many ways you can meditate, what you need to remember is that if one way does not work for you it doesn’t mean it is hopeless. Sometimes you just need to find the thing that resonates with YOU. Like for instance, I love movement meditation because I enjoy moving my body without thought, still with breathe but it has a very different outcome. As much as it clears my mind, it helps me to focus on what I need: to experience my body without anything holding me back and this allows me to discover new things about myself and what I am capable of. It empowers me and gives me a sense of belonging... something that can be missing from all of our lives. . Recently I helped two university students @marcy_muffins with an assignment about occupational therapy and took some photos that are up at Griffith University. And Lastly, proving the doctors wrong❗️I vividly remember lying in the hospital bed and the doctors telling me there was no hope for me. They said, "Jessie, you would be a vegetable for the rest of your life." Evidently they were wrong and I guess that was just protocol to say. Everyday I prove their hypothesis wrong. My friends and family will tell you I’m very much independent. I have a lot of people relying on me and being in a wheelchair ♿️doesn't negate the fact that I still have to get things done. I managed to sustain a decent GPA while juggling the busy life I bear and living independently in a wheelchair. People will frequently try to put their limitations on your life because of their own insecurities. Never have someone tell you can’t, not even a professional. Anything I put my mind to, I can easily conquer. I have three major reasons why graduating from college was vital to me. * * The first reason is I wanted to make my mother and sister proud. School is very important to them and sometimes you have to do things because you owe to people that has sacrificed so much for you. The night I got shot I prayed to God would spare my life and allow me to finish college so I can make my mom and sister proud. My sister who is receiving her PhD in the fall always stressed to me that knowledge is power. * * Secondly, showing the children in my old neighborhood that college can be an alternative. Where I’m from college is merely a fairy tale. If you're not dribbling a basketball or running football your dreams to attend college is obsolete. Growing up, my friends and I have never seen anyone attend college. In our minds the only way to attend college was through playing a sport. I have friends that grew up in incarcerated or no longer here. I sincerely miss them, but that's the harsh reality of the neighborhood I grew up in and eventually you become numb to all the unspoken trauma that’s around you. As I become older I believe that choices were made because of the lack of resources in the community. I believe if you cast the same people in these environments in a different situation they would excel beyond expectations. There is so much talent and potential that is wasted due to lack of resources. You have absolutely no restraint over the environment you were born into. I feel like it has been my personal obligation to graduate from college just so I can become a reliable source for the children growing up in these environments.
