This lake in San Cristobal was soo foggy☁️ when we first walked up! We were chatting and deciding to leave and all is a sudden it just completely cleared up! It didn’t last long but we managed to snap a few quick pics!

“El Junco Lagoon” was a stop on our highlands tour where we got to see tortoises, the tree house hotel, an amazing beach! This lagoon was one of the only freshwater lakes in the island! Frigate birds are often seen bathing here and cleaning the salt water off their wings!

31 years old and the first time I’ve ever seriously “broken” something. I fell through a missing board at a viewpoint to visit Charles Darwin’s Statue of where he first arrived in Galápagos Islands. (Survival of the fittest at its best, I know). At first I was carried by two park rangers & then Dave and our new Uruguayan friends who were there when I fell in the hole. Eventually an ambulance came and put me on a stretcher to the hospital. They took X-Rays and kept me overnight. My left tibia is fractured in multiple places. I was nervous about the hospital bill so I asked how much. They responded “nada”. I didn’t think she understood so I typed in google translate and she responded medical attention is free in Ecuador. Seriously blown away. I had no bill for anything. (I did have to buy my own crutches for $26, but they didn’t even have any at the hospital to give away.)
So we made it back to Quito yesterday, and tonight at midnight we trek home. We have 3 flights. Definitely in some pain but everyone from the 3 strangers from Uruguay, park rangers, to hospital and EMT staff, has been amazing. Our hosts at Galápagos Eco Friendly immediately came to the hospital to interpret and also give Dave rides to get me food and clothes. (We didn’t even call them, the park rangers did). Also for our 10xT friends who immediately jumped to action looking into travel insurance options before we knew about it being free. Lastly to Dave, who is now carting me around and taking “for better or for worse” seriously. .
Oh and in case you were wondering, we didn’t make it to the statue. ♀️Galápagos is amazing so we definitely will be back! .

Today, I climbed through about half a mile of an underground lava tube.
The Big Island is home to two active volcanoes. During active eruptions, lava tubes carry molten lava underground to the ocean, leaving behind cavernous passageways called lava tubes. This particular lava tube was from an eruption in 1881 and stretches for 25 miles. The tube is not lit, so to explore it you must bring a flashlight. Some parts have high ceilings while others are 3 feet high, requiring you to crouch and move carefully through.
What struck me the most was the darkness. Without a flashlight, you could see literally nothing. It was a little disconcerting, being deep underground and looking at the areas where lava had carved a path through. I thought a lot about what it must be like to be in my grave. I would hope that my grave is filled with light, but the darkness is something that we must all make our peace with.
As we explored volcanoes, lava tubes, and craters today, I reflected on death and destruction, and the inevitable rebirth that follows it. What will my death be like? Will I be plunged into darkness, or will I be able to access the light? Will my legacy leave behind joy and inspiration or will it leave behind desolation? Will my rebirth into a new destination be a beautiful one?
I hope so.
