Hi salám سلام We have had some new additions to the @englisifarsi @instagram family and I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and my mum (as it happens to be her birthday today ) My name is Moná and I am a Farsi school drop out! My mum MADE me go to persian classes EVERY weekend of my childhood. And I resisted with all my rebellious might. Only now does it dawn on me, the gems she was trying to place before me. The bilingual brain. The rich Iranian heritage. The cultural nuances. The food (my god the food!yum!!) My mum is not fancy. And for so long I wished she would be. She had chickens to make organic eggs and a garden full of herbs and fruit when she could easily go to the market. She curated her own honey from her bees (it’s back breaking work separating the comb). She would pickle her own olives. Make her own fresh mulberry jam. Make ghúreh (unripened grape vinegar) And would always got for her morning walks. Rain/hail or shine ☀️ She would rarely eat out and would ALWAYS have a hot meal prepared for me and my brothers and father. For years I resented it. Questioned it. Wanted to change it. Little did I realise that in the years to come ... I would cherish it. Be in awe of it and funnily enough, now I replicate it. She taught me resilience, faith, true joy and the power of selflessness. The generosity of spirit that keeps giving. A cup that is never empty and continues to give if itself. And for that I would never change it for the world Tavalodet Mobarak mámán jún, only now that I am a mother myself do I realise the concrete and strong foundations that you lay before me. The very stepping stones I required to get me to where I always needed to be. And I am so mamnún ‍❤️‍‍ @Nouran kiani

Hi friends, just dropping by to let you know that there's a new post on the blog all about reduplication in Persian. What's reduplication you ask? Well, I was looking through my "aks maks"and found this old one from the Moghadam Museum. I really enjoy visiting "muze puze" around Tehran you know. My student just asked me how to say "kam kam" in English. Hands up if you learned Persian with this book I spotted this beauty on the wall of one of my favorite bakeries, and the memories came flooding back. I remember this lesson perfectly. On the right, the girl's mom and brother come back in the rain. On the left, a man rides his horse in the rain with a basket and sickle. The lesson on the left was clearly to teach the letter "seen" but even as a kid I remember thinking it was strange that the best example they could come up with was dâs (sickle). It seemed like such an unusual word to learn. I mean I get that we were just learning to read and write so there were only a few choices, but still. It somehow always stood out to me. When will I ever use that? --- So I thought I'd teach you a much more useful Persian word- chiz (pronounced almost like the English "cheese" but with a shorter vowel sound). Use it when you forget the actual word for something, like whatchamacallit. This handy dandy word can also be used when you forget someone's name. In fact, I got chiz-ed today. After a mix-up with one of my classes, my student was saying how he and the others talked and decided to let Khânum.... and paused to think of my name. I almost threw him a bone and told him, but my evil side kicked in and said, "Naaaa, I kind of want to see where he goes with this..." and when the pause became painfully long, sure enough... chiz. I'm Khânum Chiz. --- So go ahead and give chiz a try next time. It'll seem like the word is on the tip of your tongue (even if it's not). If the person's nice (unlike me ) they'll try to fill in the blank for you and bam!
