Growing up in a culture where mental health and mental illness is a taboo subject, with so much stigma surrounding it, it was and still is very difficult to talk about our feelings or emotions, telling someone that it feels like our brain is another person within us would be, and still is considered crazy talk.
Thankfully we are educating each other to know better, but the conversation is far from really beginning. Our kids should be taught that their mental health is just as important as their physical health.
I want to give a shout out to all the parents/guardians that are sitting down with their kids and having a conversation with them about the importance of mental health.
Give those parents/guardians a for communicating the importance of mental health with their kids.

Mental health matters, and is so prevalent in our society. Throughout this month, we need to break the silence and start meaningful conversations about mental health, with the hope that these conversations will continue after May. .

When it comes to our physical health, we have no problem talking about it, asking for help, receiving help, and comparing experiences. This is how it should be and needs to be with mental health. People should not feel embarrassed or ashamed to discuss their mental health/mental illness, ask for help, or receive help. IT STARTS WITH US PEOPLE. .

If you are struggling with your mental health or battling with mental illness know that: You are not alone. Everyone is going through something. It is not your fault. It is not an excuse. You are not a burden or a failure. What you are feeling is valid. You are not weak. There is nothing to be ashamed of. You are not crazy. It is okay to ask for help. You are worthy. You are important. You matter. And most importantly, your struggles/illness do not define who you are. .

For those that know someone battling with mental illness or struggling with their mental health; I know you may feel frustrated, as well as, unsure (about what to do or how to help). It also may be uncomfortable for you to talk about. So, here are some suggestions: Try to be present, supportive, empathetic, and understanding. Check in with that person. Don’t pretend like everything is fine & mental illness/health doesn’t exist [you are contributing to the stigma]. Try to instill hope into that individual. Let them know that they are not a failure, a burden, or making excuses. Normalize and validate their feelings, struggles, experiences, and difficulties. And don’t expect them to respond or handle situations like you do.
