In May we visited  Domaine Sangouard-Guyot in the Mâconnais sub-region in Burgundy. @vinsdebourgogne We tasted several of their wines like Saint-Véran “Au Brulé, Pouilly-Fuissé Ancestral, Pouilly-Fuissé Ancestral Quintessence and Authentique. On the foreground you see the Pouilly-Fuissé Ancestral from the 2000 vintage. When you see the color it looks oxidized but this one was still kicking. Their wines are very good with a beautiful expression. From the two best plots in Vergisson, Ronchevat and En Carmentrant. These two plots are located just to the west of the village and the soil mainly contains loam and lime, with the emphasis on loam soil. This is very special, since this is the only area in the appellation where the soil consists mainly of loam. The wine aged for 10 months in the French oak barrels aged 3 to 5 years. The wine is pumped weekly. Pouilly-Fuissé is an appellation for white wines from southern Burgundy where the Chardonnay grape is grown. The impressive vineyards are planted on the same limestone hills that are found further north in the Côte d’Or. The high rock formations of Solutré and Vergisson are the result of hard coral fossils that are resistant to erosion. The vines are planted on steep hill flanks at an altitude of 200 to 300 meters. Domaine Sanguoard-Guyot has been a family business since the 19th century. in 1997 Pierre-Emmanuel took over the winery from his grandfather and in 2000 also a winery from his in-laws. Since then, Pierre-Emmanuel and his wife Catherine have been working hard to make top wines in Pouilly-Fuissé in particular. They also own vineyards in Macon and Saint-Veran. They are lucky that many individual pieces of land (34 in total) have been planted on different clay-limestone soils.
