Today’s SVU guest star is Marni Nixon, an actress/singer whose name and face you might not recognize, but whose voice you most definitely have heard! Marni’s gorgeous singing voice was used in some of Old Hollywood’s most famous classical films, including West Side Story (voiced the songs for Natalie Wood) and My Fair Lady (for Audrey Hepburn). She even gave Marilyn Monroe a bit of help with the high notes in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes! She voiced the geese in Mary Poppins and played Sister Sophia in The Sound of Music. (Anyone ever heard of a little song called “Maria?” It is Marni.) Sadly, the Hollywood studios often tried to hide that it was Marni’s voice behind the faces of the big stars and she often worked without getting any credit at all.
