Please zoom in for more details. This armor for a boy in the @germanisches_nationalmuseum (inv. W 1345) has been made in Augsburg in 1563. It is decorated with etchings made by a master with the initials HS, that may be Hans Strohmeyer. The armor has also been blackened and gilded. By the middle of the 16th century, the influence of Spanish court fashion was gaining ground, which led to the development of the elongated peascod breastplate. One can notice the visor, typical of the second half of the 16th century, which consists of two parts and has only small breathing holes on the left side, while on the right side there are many slots for ventilation. With the children's armor the young people were accustomed to a chivalrous life and representative purposes were also fulfilled. Some armor for adolescents have been preserved, which are basically the same design as the adult armor. The fact that these armors could only be worn for a short time before their wearers had outgrown them did not prevent anyone from making these armors as elaborate as those for adults. The Augsburg city mark is to be seen on the breastplate. #armor #armour #medievalarmor #ritter #ritterrüstung #chevalier #germanischesnationalmuseum #rycerz #knight #armormaking #armorer #metalart #metalartist #arthistory #renaissanceart

This three-quarters armor in the @germanisches_nationalmuseum (inv. W 2823) is said to be an officers armor. It has been made around 1550 in Brunswick, where at that time had already established quite a significant armor production. It is made of iron, that had been steeled, decorated with brass rivets and the hallmarked motif of a iron chain around the breast- and backplate. An iron chain had been a symbol for authority, so this is consistent with the assumption that it is an officer's armor. On various parts of the armor, points are hallmarked, possibly to mark these parts as belonging together, if very similar armor was kept with them together or had been produced in the workshop to the same time. On most parts of the armor there are marks with eleven points, on the right elbow-cop are twelve points and on the left one thirteen. So I think there were at least a minimum of thirteen of these armor existant. Thus, this medium-quality armor would be an example of early mass production. In the following decades, the rulers repeatedly ordered quantities of identical armor for their personal guards and officers. #armor #armour #germanischesnationalmuseum #brunswickarmor #rüstung #rycerz #armormaking #armorer #1550 #harnisch #helmet #knight #ritter #breastplate #chevalier #arthistory #medievalarmor

Please zoom in for a more detailed view. This great helm from the @dhmberlin (inv. W 1003) was found at the site of a former castle on the isle of Usedom. This helmet is well known, as it is one of only a few extant specimens of this type. Between about 1230 and 1350, the great helm, also called heaume or pot helm was part of the knights equipment. Usually it was worn over a mail coif, sometimes in conjunction with a close-fitting iron cap. The great helm gave good protection, but was not very comfortable to wear. This helmet was made in the second half of the 13th century. It consists out of five plates and a additional cruciform iron part, that contains the eye slits. Two front-plates and two back-plates and a top-plate are riveted together. Between the front-plates there is a gap of 0,4 inch (1 cm), that is for the vision. The cruciform iron part is revived at the front-plates and reduces the high of the eye-slits to 0,2 inch (0,5 - 0,6 cm). It is 11,8 inch (30 cm) high in the front and 9,9 inch (25,2 cm) in the back. The lower front-plate has many ventilation holes. The thickness of the plates is 0,0787 inch (2 mm) and the helmet wights 4,98 lb (2260 g). Due to rusting the helmet has lost some of its original wight. The helmet convinces by the simplicity of its construction and the very solid impression it makes. #helmet #greathelm #topfhelm #pothelm #knight #ritter #rycerz #chevalier #armor #armour #armourmaking #armourer #deutscheshistorischesmuseum #rüstung #medievalarmor #dhmberlin

This bellows-visor helmet in the Maximilian Style in the @germanisches_nationalmuseum (inv. W 2162) is an example for a German high quality close helmet, made between 1520 and 1530. The comb is a little prominent and the fluting gets over the whole skull. The bellows-shaped areas of the visor are relatively pointed. So this is a typical bellows-visor close helmet from the third decade of the 16th century. This kind of helmet had been worn together with a high quality Maximilian armor, whose decoration consisted only of the fluting. In the city of Landshut at that time there was a significant production of high-quality armor in Maximilian style, that had been produced for the wealthy nobility, but not for the Habsburg court and the very highest of the ruling class. These kind of armor are not adorned with additional etchings or gilding and derive their elegance solely from their close-fitting design in combination with the fluting of the surface. On the helmet neck there is the Landshut proof mark, as to be seen on the last picture. #armour #helmet #maximilianarmour #armor #rüstung #броня #rycerz #armourmaking #renaissanceart #arthistory #metalart #metalwork #armourer #chevalier #ritter #medievalarmor #ritterrüstung

Please zoom in for more details. This back- and breastplate, gorget, pauldrons and vambraces are belonging together and are parts of an armor in the @dhmberlin (inv. W 1051) that has been made around 1500, presumably in Innsbruck. The helmet that belongs to this armor will be shown in the next post. The period around 1500 was accompanied by a great stylistic change from the Gothic to the Renaissance, which was also reflected in the design of armor. Especially in this backplate the gothic influence is still very strong. The engraved letters (N•N•M•N•N) in the upper part of back- and breastplate, whose meaning is unknown to me, are already referring to the Renaissance. Also the bulbous form of the breastplate and the decoration with fluted lines points in the direction of the Maximilian Style armor of the Renaissance, whilst the absence of tassets is more typical of Gothic style. The pauldrons and vambraces, with articulated lames for the protection of the joints of the arms, as well as the gorget, are clearly made in the early renaissance style. Thus, this armor is a significant example of stylistic transition. The right forearm should actually better be turned in the other direction, because than it would be like it belongs. #dhmberlin #armor #armour #gothicstyle #renaissancestyle #arthistory #rycerz #renaissanceart #armormaking #armourer #chevalier #ritter #metalart #medievalarmor #metalwork #rüstungen #рыцарь
