While the world of summers Out East is something I’ve never experienced and really only know through Instagram, I feel a deep connection to Glynn and his summer in The Hive. Is it because we’re both only children? Because I’m most at home near the ocean and this story is more or less set against the backdrop of the ocean? Because Glynn worried about the impact of his self-discovery on his friend’s’ perception of him and his parents’ dreams of his future? Because he’s nostalgic? Or simply because this beautiful writing pulled me in and made me feel? . I loved this book. It’s a smooth, beautiful summer read. It’s pretty gay, too, which always helps. . (P.S. I literally gasped when I realized his cousin Jay, who is a journalist on the Celtics beat, is my FAVORITE journalist on the Celtics beat.)

Her movie The Prince and the Showgirl co-starring Laurence Olivier would have been in cinemas when my Irish granny was on her 1957 cross country road trip. Most people think of Marilyn as an airhead, but the blonde bombshell had a library of 430 books from James Joyce's Ulysses to Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass.
