In 1998 Mercedes-Benz commissioned two examples of their new super-sedan, the brilliant C43 AMG, to be used as safety cars for the FedEx Championship Indy Cart across North America. The story goes that AMG further developed these two C43s pushing their drivetrain and ECU to increase HP, torque and top speed. When tested at the Nardo oval track in Italy, these alledgedly reached 188mph before being shipped to USA. Once in America, each car was disassembled and received a $30K paint job in FedEx color scheme (the main sponsor for Indy Racing at the time). It is believed that one car was heavily used on the track, while the other one was displayed trackside at each race. About a year later, as Mercedes retired from Indy racing to focus on DTM and F-1, they did so with direct instructions to destroy both cars and they succeeded; partially. The one you see here, which is the car that was mainly used for display, survived and was given to the owner of Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville Florida. Showing only 2,329 original miles today, this is likely the lowest mileage C43 AMG in existence and quite possibly, the only factory C43 AMG pace car in the world (C43s were not used in Formula 1) Quite a find from our friend @mariottimichael (his pristine ML55 AMG in the background) , this C43 could be the crown jewel of any Mercedes-AMG collector.
