I have a question for you. . If I were to tell you that "Releases" and foam rolling don't make physical changes, meaning they don't break down adhesions, "knots", scar tissue, etc, and instead told you that all they did was temporarily reduce sensitivity and symptoms that you feel, would you value them any less? . Would it make you throw away the roller because it is just something that modifies your symptoms but doesn't make physical change? . If you say yes, should we also throw away exercise that acts purely as symptom modification as well? Because sometimes exercise is a placebo too. . I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to these questions BTW. Because it's not about the therapy. It's about what we say the therapy does. . Manual therapy and "releases" are just symptom modification. They still work the same as before. It still pretty much hurts to roll over the area and then feels a bit better when you stop. For all intents and purposes, nothing has changed except your understanding of what it does and your belief about how it works. . Yet, this small change could be huge. . It's huge because now you can see it for what it is, and we can reduce the risk of someone developing DEPENDENCY on it. (Which admittedly is a risk we can never 100% eliminate.) . This is a hard line that we walk because narratives have power and what we say something does influences the outcome of it. Tell someone they have knots and provide a therapy to fix it and it helps. Tell someone they are weak and provide them an exercise to fix it and it can help. . But does it instill a mindset of fragility or resiliency? Does it promote to this person that they have yet another problem in need of fixing, or does it promote to them that they are capable of coming out the other side? . To be clear, this is not a manual therapy issue. It could be an exercise issue. . But it's an issue of narratives and what we say. I want you to understand what things do so that you can see them for what they are. . If you feel like something could help, it'll probably help. Use it. But know what it is and what it isn't. And don't become dependent on anything. . You're stronger than that. . #Prehab101
