I saw my first Monarch of the season the other day, the moment was long awaited. Every emotion from the last few years came flooding back, I cried and laughed tears of joy, the butterflies were back. When we first bought this house there was no yard to speak of, nothing but dirt rocks and sand. Until one day, sad and broken from the baby that we had lost and the residual pain I was in, I cracked the earth open, over and over again, slowly turning this space into the garden I have today. A year later the butterflies came. I raised two itty bitty caterpillars into two big beautiful Monarch butterflies, a male and female as fate would have it. I remember when they flew away, I cried, all that time raising them for just a moment of pure joy, it really didn't seem fair. The garden I so painstakingly created now supported the most incredible life, fleeting though it was. Not long after, one Monarch came back and laid her eggs all over my milkweeds-- for me it was such a profound symbol of the life I carried and the life I had lost, and the Joy I had found in the garden. I carefully collected each one of the tiny eggs, taking care of them even though I positively loath caterpillars, until that terrible day our lives changed forever. I remember sitting in my backyard with tear-filled eyes, I hadn't slept in days, staring at the butterfly enclosure I contemplated releasing them all, knowing full well that most of them wouldn't make it— I had enough things to take care of, three small girls and a husband who still lay sleeping after countless seizures while fighting thoughts of suicide from the anti-seizure meds he was on. In the end, I kept them, tending to them even on the days where I didn't think I could make it through, after all, I was the one who brought them here. I released 34 monarchs about one month later, and when the last few butterflies began to emerge...so did he. These tiny creatures mean more to me than I could ever put into words.
