The camp he wasn’t meant to be going on! Hugo’s off for 5 days of adventure in the countryside with his year 7 friends, but only as of last Friday and certainly not as a result of ‘good behaviour’! His head of year, ‘Sir’, has collared me at every opportunity since last December to ask if Hugo would like to go on this trip; Hugo continued to say he wasn’t interested, but ‘Sir’ was persistent. You see, ‘Sir’ knows Hugo better than Hugo knows himself! We’ve been beyond lucky that in ‘Sir’ Hugo has found someone not only willing to give him space, time and understanding (in quite often the most frustrating of situations), but someone willing to learn about H’s ways, adapt his methods, listen when I offer nuggets of Hugo knowledge and think outside the classroom ‘box’. ‘Sir’ understood that maybe Hugo’s report scores weren’t as great as they should have been, but is convinced that he will see the characteristics Hugo’s been lacking in the classroom, out in the wild. He knows that not all kids are made for the classroom, but is doing his darndest to get Hugo through, and find his ‘thing’ in the meantime. The bloke’s a bloody legend! LEGACIES I often go down rabbit holes of thought. More often lately when pumping during the night hence the increase in posts.. One rabbit hole I often end up in is that of how we are here. More so..the pattern of how things turn out by a series of decisions over decades of time. This is my Grandmother meeting her 22nd Great Grandchild!!! There are also 22 of us her grandchildren and 8 of her children. To really think and fathom those numbers...is quite something to me. That they would not exist had my grandmother not met her love, had her 8 gorgeous babies and them in turn had theirs..and them..theirs. We are all a product of choices. Boy am I glad my mum met my dad, for my 4 boys would not be here had they not. My grandmother thanks us each time we bring a new life into the world and I say back to her...."but thank you granny, had it not been for you he wouldnt be here". And it rings true with me each time I remind her. We talk a lot about legacies of what we leave behind after we are gone. And the truth is..its our children. In whatever form our children become so, they are our legacy. I read the following by Joan Moran on a Huffpost piece.. "The idea of leaving a legacy is the need or the desire to be remembered for what you have contributed to the world. In some cases, that contribution can be so special that the universe is unalterably changed." What could be more of a contribution to this world than our children, reared to be kind loving conscious people. We’ve been living off variations of pasta, slightly mushy fruit and corner shop bought milk for quite a few days now – because something has to give and, this week, it’s the food shop! I can’t do it all – cram more than a full-time job into part-time hours, while ferrying children to their school taster days, enthusiastically supporting their sporting achievements, washing all the clothes (the boys have more outfit changes than the Spice Girls tour) and all the other minutia that take up our lives. On a side-note, why does just going to open the lounge blind always turn into tidying toys, plumping the sofa, folding blankets and clearing glasses/bowls?! If at any given moment Mr OG happens to notice my huffing and puffing and ask “can I do anything?”, the never ending carousel of jobs is reeled off to him with a ferocity only matched by a ravenous, hangry pack of hyenas. Having 5 minutes to water the small patch of garden not given over for football, feels like a spa-break! I’m living in a perpetual state of fear of the summer holidays and suddenly working from home with 3 kids around for 6 weeks is becoming very real what I’m saying is, fuck it/wing it/fake it/just do it to get through... The end of an era! It only feels like yesterday that he was throwing bean bags in hoops, jumping in brightly coloured sacks and struggling to stay upright for the 30m sprint. This has always been Bruno’s day to shine (staying upright got easier!); nativities, assemblies, plays and music recitals, have all come and gone with little more than my sons staring out of windows or picking at their jumpers. But, for one – usually sunny – day in the academic year, Bruno gets to stretch those gazelle-like legs and collect his He was inconsolable earlier in the year when he lost his House Captaincy - due to a silly hand gesture at a friend, if you know, you know – it was just silly/childish, not rude - as he’d looked up to so many House Captains before him, lifting the Sports Day cup. But, today he went out and gave his best for his house – they won, and although he didn’t raise that cup as captain, he was asked to stand with the Head while she celebrated his and his team’s netball achievements from earlier in the week – a small win for the boy who’s given his all on that sports field, since day one in his polyester sweat-sack. He’s outgrown this 200m track, the foam javelins and definitely the sacks (he could only get one leg in this morning!), today felt like the beginning of the end of his primary school life.
