I love this book! . . I finished Verity a couple of weeks ago and I’m not even joking, it was the first book (that wasn’t a re-read) that I’ve given five stars to since I finished The Color Purple in JULY 2017. . . This raises some questions. Am I really stingy with my ratings? Have I just been reading the wrong books? Why can I smell beans on toast? Who fucken knows! But this book took me on a wild ride and I loved it. The only other thrillers I’ve ever loved this much are Gone Girl and We Need to Talk About Kevin so Colleen Hoover is in good company. I won’t go into the plot summary or whatever because every bookstagrammer and their dog has talked about it but MAN IT’S SO GOOD. If you like thrillers, you have to read it. Have to. It’s the law. . . I still can’t believe this is a departure from her usual wheelhouse. I DEMAND MORE THRILLERS, COLLEEN SUSTAIN MEEEEE. . . No but seriously, I figured out fairly quickly what was going on and I’m not exactly the sharpest when it comes to guessing plot twists, so it was either an obvious solve or maybe I was just lucky. EITHER WAY DOESNT MATTER because I still really enjoyed it. Why, you ask? Well I’ll tell you. . . 1. There was enough character development and subplot that I didn’t mind being right. 2. I enjoyed the Breakfast Club homage. Aaaand 3. it felt authentically high school without being cringey so thanks bb. Right are you ready to disagree with me because I didn’t like this book. The concept was great. The plot was even better . Emma Donoghue is clearly a talented storyteller. But OH MY GOD I became so frustrated with Jack as the narrator after a while. (If you don’t know the book, it’s entirely written from the point of view of Jack who is five years old.) I was desperate for a change in perspective and it didn’t come. I know. I’m awful. I’m sorry. Have you read anything from Daphne DuMaurier? We are doing The Winters by @lisagabriele as a part of our Espresso and above boxes for November. It’s not exactly a retelling because although the plot and characters seem very resonating, the story of The Winters is very unique. It has all the Elements of a good thriller and some spookiness too. Reading this might involve some goosebumps, bated breath waiting and maybe even nail biting! Not to forget, the cover makes this one a total eye candy too! It’s tough to find thrillers in hardcover, as most by Horowitz and Nesbo release in paperback in India.
