Thanks for doing all of this great work @jamiebourgeois! Jamie writes: "The mordant results are in! I mordanted the left side with 8% WOF powdered alum and the right side with 50% WOF Symplocos (from Botanical Colors). Both mordanted pieces (all a silk/cotton blend) were dyed at the same time, in the same dye pot. (Some pieces are missing on either side because of how I chose do some over dyeing, but all pieces are lined up according to dye. (The indigo wasn’t actually mordanted at all, but I put it in the stack anyway ‍♀️)) Overall the Symplocos mordanted fabric came out slightly more pale. It’s really only noticeable in the cochineal & logwood (Symplocos logwood also appears to be more grey), but if you look REALLY close you can still see some difference in the other pieces. I have a feeling that using Symplocos at 75-100% WOF would help lessen the gap. Anyway, I like the Symplocos option and will definitely integrate it into my practice. Next step, printing!" I say this every time but surely these are the best yet?! Absolutely STUNNING results from each and every student today on the ‘Eco-Spectrum: Core Skills in Natural Fabric Dyeing’ workshop. I’m so thrilled to share this work, especially in my new studio. This was the first full day event and the space worked brilliantly. It’s such a pleasure teaching here and a privilege to pass on such ancient techniques. As the popularity of this craft rises and information (sometimes MISinformation) is spread via social media, it feels more important than ever to teach these core skills. My lovely students today can consider themselves initiated guardians of a craft that connects them to hundreds of generations before them and hopefully hundreds to follow. ❤️

Wattle is a member of the Acacia family and is used extensively in leather tanning as it is prized for its even coverage and penetration of skins and pelts for tanning. Natural dyers use it as one of the rich tannins to create iron-based grays and blacks or to overdye with indigo to create interesting muted greens. The color is a beige with a pink cast and it has a characteristic toasted wood smell.
