On this day, a century ago, British Colonel Reginal Dyer locked thousand of peaceful protestors in a public garden in Amritsar. He and his men fired over 1600 rounds into the crowd, shooting indiscriminately at the people who were gathered there and had no means of escape. Hundreds died. When Dyer returned to England, he was treated as a hero. Rudyard Kipling, whose writing and poetry is treated as some form of national treasure, commended Dyer for fulfilling his “duty”. • The first time I heard of this event was when I visited the garden a few years ago. I saw the bullet holes in the walls and the deep well that many of the 20,000 men, women and children jumped down in order to save their lives from the bullets. The second time I heard about this event was in Rushdie’s book when the narrator describes how his grandfather narrowly survives the massacre. It is perhaps one of the most sobering and potent chapters of any book I’ve read. But I’d never heard of this event before: history books, media outlets and the British government will pretend like it never happened.
