No matter how good the fishing is, we always stop the boat to say hi to these guys. These gentle giants are always happy to make eye contact and they are as curious about us as we are about them. One of the many gems we have here on Cape Cod . . . . . . . . . #onthewatermagazine #myfishingcapecod #molamola #oceansunfish #capecod #capecodinsta #capecodbay #blind_cast #getoutside #explorecapecod #sunfish #bassfishing #striperfishing #topwaterfishing #blueoceanlife #saltwaterfishing

Beautiful video of an encounter with a group of #molamola or Ocean Sunfish of the family molidae. They are the heaviest bony fish in the world weighing in between 247 and 1,000kg!!! They are such an odd looking creature. Sea lions, sharks and Orcas will feed on them as well as humans in some parts of the world. They are capable of swimming around 26km per day at a speed of roughly 3km/hour but in times of need they can move fast enough to leap out of the water. I have seen them a couple times at a distance but never up close like this… they have been quite shy the times our paths have crossed so I guess I will have to be patient. Does all this cold weather have you dreaming of the tropics? Here's a fish you'd meet in warmer waters around the globe: The ocean sunfish (Mola mola), the heaviest known bony fish in the world, weighing up to 5,000 pounds. (Some sharks are heavier, but they’re cartilaginous fish, with skeletons made of cartilage, not bone.) This widely-distributed species is often spotted on the ocean's surface, basking in the Sun. One possible reason why? Sunfish carry more than 50 types of skin parasites! Popping up to the surface invites seabirds to "clean" off the uninvited pests. Photo: Per-Ola Norman

Photo by @nickhawkinsphotography // It’s peculiar that people often claim mola molas, or ocean sunfish, as their favourite fish. Perhaps it’s because molas are almost unimaginable — so strange and wonderful that it’s hard to believe evolution actually produced such a thing. In the crystal blue waters off Halifax, Nova Scotia, we watched them move with astonishing efficiency — even grace. Swimming beside the sunfish I returned their curious gaze and marvelled at their unique elegance. And I understood that the open ocean is a place full of life strange, beautiful, and awe-inspiring. Follow me @nickhawkinsphotography for more open ocean wonders. The mola mola in this shot is right side up, the red patch in front of the eye is a dense group of parasitic copepods that are commonly found on the giant fish. Shot on assignment for @seabluecanada with text by @tomcheney. This summer we’re shining a light on the species and ecosystems of Atlantic Canada. @SeaLegacy #TurningTheTide with @ecologyaction @davidsuzukifdn @wwfcanada @cpaws_national

The Mola mola, or ocean sunfish, may look like something out of a child's imagination, made with left over fish parts to create a bizarre animal with a permanently surprised expression. These odd-ooking giants can get up to 10 feet long from head to tail. With a tiny mouth, they slurp up jellies as they swim through the ocean. Molas are fairly common in Monterey Bay, spending part of their time floating on their sides at the surface, where boaters can get a good view. Sunning molas are visited by gulls who pick off tasty snacks- external parasites! In fact, molas host a high number of parasites, so they might not make an appetizing meal! ⠀ ⠀ #mola #molamola #oceansunfish #oceanlife #ocean #sunfish #MontereyBay #underwatervideo #MBARI

Have you ever seen a mola mola blowing bubbles? Sometimes mola molas will use this coughing action to blow jets of water to dislodge prey caught in the mouth!
