A little snippet of ‘Non mi dir’ from last night’s performance of ‘Don Giovanni’ at @hougrandopera! It always feels so good to return to Mozart. I love how exposed the vocal lines are while singing Mozart heroines. It feels like the voice is naked, and vulnerable. The orchestration feels like the extension of a deep and ethereal atmosphere than can shift at every show. It feels very much like seeing a classical sculpture that looks light and measured, and yet there is a sense of pain and weighted beauty. It is sublime to sing my first Donna Anna with Maestro Cristian Măcelaru leading this gorgeous orchestra. The dynamic nuances in performance can only really happen when there is great collaboration with such a sensitive conductor and orchestra...it is the element that sets live performances apart! A willingness to not only play well, but also to listen to each other, and combine the level of sentiment together results in a magical musical experience for the performers and audience alike. Looking forward to our final two performances on May 3rd and 5th!

It is always important to arrive at rehearsals prepared! Even after rehearsals have ended, however, and I am in the middle of a run of performances, I continue to work by myself in the practice room! The more I can “master” my vocal technique and the better I know every detail of the music, the more artistically free I can be in performance - discovering nuances in the music, and letting the details of the character flow. Tonight, at @hougrandopera, I will be repeating this pre-performance ritual as I prepare to sing Donna Anna in Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni!’ Why put it in all this work? Love!
