“Into The Palo Duro” - This painting combines two of the things I most enjoy painting, Palo Duro Canyon and a group of horses. Painting horses going down a hill is a challenge, but when you grow up in a canyon, it's something you see almost every day. My dad used to always tell me to make sure that every horse in a group of horses looked different. Not just a variety of colors, but conformations as well. Ty & I made a last minute decision to take the RV to Colorado & we decided to stop by Palo Duro Canyon State Park on the way! I’m SO glad we did. The weather was unseasonably cooler than expected and we hiked the 6 mile Lighthouse Trail. With an abundance of rain this year, the wildflowers were on full display, adding enchantment & color to the terra cotta canyon. Millions of chest high, purple American basketflowers lined the trail. Oakley was the best baby, smiling the whole time with a little catnap on the way. We had the best time! I love these two so much. Coming across the flat grasslands of west TX, you’d never expect to see such a gorgeous canyon. Palo Duro lies about 30 miles from Amarillo in the TX Panhandle. The second largest canyon in the United States, the term “Palo Duro” means “hardwood” in Spanish, and was named by those first explorers for the canyon’s abundant mesquite and juniper trees from which the Indians made their “hardwood” bows. One of the last refuges for the Comanches and Kiowas, Palo Duro was the site of a harrowing battle during the Red River War that pushed American Indians out of the Texas Panhandle and made way for the reigning cattle ranch era. #palodurocanyon #exploretexas #texas
