This triple spiral symbol is engraved on one of the stones inside the Stone Age passage tomb of Newgrange in County Meath, Ireland . . Newgrange fascinates us and we definitely want to pay a visit. Especially on the Winter solstice when the sun illuminates a specific part deep inside, which is cloaked in darkness the rest of the year! . . The symbol itself is quite a famous Celtic symbol called the Triple Spiral/ Triskelion, or Triskele . . The symbol actually predates the Celts arrival to Ireland and Europe by thousands of years! This symbol was carved in to the stone over 5000 years ago and Newgrange itself is said to be that old too! So predates the Pyramids and Stonehenge . . While no one knows what the symbol meant to those who carved it, we know that the number 3 was important to Celts and this is widely accepted as a Celtic symbol now . . Today the symbol is related to the triple goddess in neopaganism and Wicca, but is has multiple meanings including, the three world's / mind, body, spirit / life, death, rebirth plus more. We will definitely be looking at this symbol again!

A r i t u a l l a n d s c a p e_III | Leaving magnificent Maeshowe behind for this time. A narrow path between the fields has been made as an access to this impressive Neolithic passage tomb. What looks like a wall at the end, going all the way across the picture, is the surrounding henge, a vast circular ditch around the central mound, with a diameter of between 70 and 80 m. The mound itself is 35m in diameter and 7m high. The landscape surrounding Maeshowe in Neolithic times looked much the same as it does today. The alignment of the monument suggests that the community who built it held ceremonies that focused upon key points within the solar calendar such as Midwinter. The winter sun plays the central role. From mid-November until mid-January the sun shines into the chamber at sunset and lights up the back wall, gradually creeping down the passage and across the floor. At the winter solstice the shaft of light hits the back wall at about 1440 GMT, and by 1505 the sun has set behind the Ward Hill of Hoy. Maeshowe may look primitive on the outside, but the grassy mound hides a truly impressive stone structure, exceptionally well preserved and one of the finest examples of a chambered tomb in northwestern Europe. It comprises a long low and narrow passageway, and a central chamber with side cells (swipe for drawings). The square central chamber is surprisingly large and tall, around 4,5 x 4,5 m, and the same in height. It's constructed largely of flat slabs of stone, many of which traverse nearly the entire length of the walls. In each corner lie huge angled buttresses that rise to the vaulting. At a height of about 0.91 m, the wall's construction changes from the use of flat to overlapping slabs creating a beehive-shaped vault. It seems that after several hundred years of use as a burial tomb, Maeshowe was closed up for good and at least 3,000 years passed before it again attracted attention. This time it was Vikings, who broke into the mound from above in the winter of 1153- 54 AD, when Orkney was still under Norwegian rule. The vaulted roof is a reconstruction, as the original one was ruined as a result of this famous visit.

Climbed a wee mountain to reach Cnoc na Sí ("hill of the faeries"), a 5000yr old passage tomb + burial mound that's said to be a gateway to the Otherworld. I climbed inside + felt some verrry interesting things which I believe is best to only talk about in person. . . . My homeland travels in Éireann continue on, been here for 2 weeks + have another 2 weeks here still. To fund this trip I slowly + steadily saved up all the $ I made hustling potions at markets over the course of 2018, which involved a big investment of time + labour, so I'm feeling very grateful to be here + to have time off work since (like many self employed people) I generally need to work everyday. . . . I want to extend my most heartfelt thanks to every single person who came out + bought medicines from me at markets last year, as your support is the reason I'm able to make this trip happen. Every elixir, every tea blend, every essence + every salve I sold, no matter what rate on the sliding scale was accessed, has funded this trip + it's the most nourishing medicine for my heart + spirit to be back on the wee Isle that my family is from. . . . Most of my family still lives in the neighbourhood where my dad was raised in English occupied Béal Feirste (Belfast); my mom is an Irish citizen of Irish, French + Scottish ancestry. I was born + raised within settler society in occupied southern Ontario which is a very familiar place for me, but I still know that I'm an uninvited guest. I'm so grateful to live where I do, yet I know it's not truly my home. Whenever I return to Éireann + particularly to occupied Northern Ireland where my family is, I'm reminded of how deeply English colonialism has harmed my People. It's very emotional (!) + I choose to use these emotions as fuel to keep learning how to work against colonialism + to work towards being in solidarity with Indigenous folks who's lands I live on. . . . When I return to Éireann it feels like coming home, even though I wasn't raised here + I've only been able to visit every 3yrs or so. Go raibh míle mhaith agat/a thousand blessings of goodness to you, to everyone who's helped me get home this time. ☺️

When I go to a sacred place I like to quiet my mind and see what presents itself. Some places show themselves to me more than others, but I find each place has its own character below the surface of the stories/histories we tell about it. This one I felt really physically, through my hands. It's hard to explain the feeling, but when I put my hands on this stone I felt a sparkly sort of something flowing into my hands, rather powerfully. But as soon as I tried thinking about it, the feeling would go away. Haha. Maybe we need to stop talking about these sort of places so much and see what they have to say to us. We noticed also that all of the hunebedden we visited were oriented north-south, so when you enter the door, you are facing north. I've read in some cultures the north is the land of the dead, but I have no idea whether this applies to these people living so long ago. At least it means they were aware of the direction and it meant a lot to them. The second photo is of our compass facing (roughly) north at the entrance.

These cold, rainy LA days make me think of the last time I took @brynnster home to Ireland to visit my family and my best friend since we were 4, @caitrionaleavey, took us to #loughcrewcairns, passage tombs built approximately 5.5 thousand years ago, making them older than the Pyramids in Egypt and Stonehenge. #surfacepatterndesign #surfacedesign #inspiration #irishpride #homesick #prehistoricart #historicpreservation #ancestry #passagetomb

Gånggrifter vid Mysinge och Resmo. (post nr. 2) - The first post will be photos from the best known one in Mysinge, the second post begins with photos of the the other two in Mysinge then the one in Resmo. - The oldest graves on Öland are the passage tombs (gånggrifter), 3 in Mysinge and 1 in Resmo. The best preserved of the 4 is in the southern part of the village of Mysinge. Passage tombs were built between 3350-3200BCE and are the successors of the dolmen (dös), the oldest of the megalithic tombs from the Stone Age. They in turn were succeeded by the cist tomb (hällkista) in the end of the Stone Age but there are some sporadic finds from a later period when people chose to place their dead in the older passage tomb. Megalithic tombs appear with the coming of agriculture and a new culture from the continent, the time period is also called the "Farmer Stone Age" (Bondestenåldern). - Passage tombs have a "T" shape with the passage or entrance leading to a room at the end where the bodies of the dead were placed. The burial chamber is usually surrounded by a mound of earth making it look like a burial mound (gravhög) with a stone chamber sticking out. The dead were not cremated but placed in the chamber whole along with some simple grave goods. The most famous area for chamber tombs is Falbygden in Falköping, Västergötland where there are 127 confirmed and 77 unconfirmed (2/3 of all in Sweden). The largest one here, "Ragvald's grave" with a 13 meter long entrance and 17 meter long burial chamber. Passage tombs are also found in Halland, Bohuslän, Skåne and these four on Öland. The first photos are of the well preserved one in Mysinge, the only one with an informational sign. The mound surrounding it is 14 meters in diameter and 1.2 meters high. The burial chamber is 3.7x1.7m and about 1.25m high. The passage is 7.75m long, 0.6m wide and 1m high. It was excavated in 1908 by T.J. Arne who found skeletons of 30-40 people along with axes, flint arrows, bone nails, arm-shields for archery, amber pearls and ceramics.
