There are SO many wonderful benefits to physical activity, yet the vast majority of marketing in the fitness industry focuses on aesthetics.
.
I think as fitness instructors it is important that we create a safe, fun environment for our clients. Remind them that it is okay to take breaks or to meet themselves where they are. Encourage them to breathe and move at their own pace while expanding their comfort zone. Educate on how to prevent injury + the harms of over-training. Tell clients to find movement they enjoy doing, and to move intuitively. Help them with specific goals but never, ever body shame or encourage them to want to shrink themselves. Sure there will be clients that desire to change their bodies, it isn’t our job to shame them for wanting to do that either. I find it helpful to listen, then educate on how shifting the focus away from intentional weight-loss actually has better long-term results for overall health (dieting = dangerous) I also think it is important to have HAES aligned intuitive eating counselors/dietitians in your network to refer out to for nutritional needs vs giving out cookie-cutter macro plans. .
I’ve been to both fitness and yoga classes that shamed students for taking water breaks .... FOR DRINKING WATER! As if it is for the weak or causes distraction. I spent much of my life working out to change the shape of my body, and it wasn’t helpful to have that reiterated to me when I was at the gym. Whatever your body does (aesthetically) when you create healthy, helpful habits that improve your well-being is okay! .
Let’s shift toxic fitness culture that food shames and body shames to a more beneficial way. Eating disorders are the most deadly mental illness + toxic fitness culture is part of the problem. Diet culture isn’t going away over night but fitness trainers have a big opportunity to make a difference and learn to be part of the solution!
