Joining this #lessonslearnedinteaching trend by @adventuresofmssmith_ !!! I will share 4 important things I have learned so far in my 4 years. (Along with some of my fav class photos!) • 1. Kids watch me 24/7. The way I act is contagious to them. They watch how I handle situations, they watch how I interact with other teachers.. they watch how I respond to just about anything. They watch & remember. Set the example. • 2. I will not be everyone’s person & that is okay. I’m here for the kids. They are my ‘why’ to everything. I recently saw a quote on Twitter that said, ‘Be bold. Be brave. Be the best thing for kids.’ I’ve learned it’s okay to do something different or to just be different in general if it’s what my kids need. • 3. This job probably won’t get any easier. But every year I get better & better. So every year the goal is to be better than I was last year. Be competitive against myself. There’s a lot I can improve on. Focusing both on what has gone well & what can get better has helped me each year. • 4. I have the ability to make or break a kid. Even when there are circumstances I can’t control (home life for example), I actually have a lot I can control when they are under my care. This past year I learned to make every moment count & that actually impacts a lot more than I used to think. For those minutes they are with me.. I can control ALL of that. • ✨What is a major takeaway that you’ve learned through the year(s)?! "How can you make it more exciting?!" Me constantly during writing lessons! This 'Roll a Sentence' is a fun activity to practise writing interesting sentences. There are a range of levels for the game as well as recording sheets to cater for your student's needs. And there is something about 'silly sentences' that just engages and gives kids the giggles like no other!

Phonics should NEVER be boring, scripted, and your least favorite subject to teach. My goal is to make phonics hands on and engaging! I love how Kayla from @naturallykindergarten added some FUN to the roll and read long vowel center! Her little ones got to practice their long vowel fluency by rolling a big inflatable dice and then crossing off the word from the Smart Board. What is your favorite way to practice phonics skills?!? PHONICS TRAIN TUNNELS! . . I set up this super quick phonics game today using trains, tracks, paper cups and some dot stickers. It took less than 5 minutes and was easy to pack away too. . . Match the train and carriage, say the sound it makes and then drive it through the corresponding tunnel whilst making that sound! Simple and active, fixing the letter/sound correspondence through play and movement. . . If you tap my picture to watch today’s stories you can see a couple of videos where I explain the set up and watch my 4 year old playing too. . . I’ve been asked a few times this week about stories that have expired. Remember that you can watch them again indefinitely via the story highlights. I save them to those according to category, eg these ones will later be found under ABC (where you’ll find all storytelling, phonics, writing and related ideas!) . . You can also find a whole archive of ideas on the blog itself where there are 1000 articles/ activities to browse through. . .
